She fought (or is about to fight, or currently in the midst of it) today in Bredene. Information has been very hard to come by, as of March 30th her team released a statement that her opponent was still TBD with no clue who it might be, yet they were certain that she would in fact be competing in a tuneup. She was removed from the BoxRec page for the card, just within the last hour. Anyway, I'm hoping that she and Katie Taylor meet for a unification and don't miss each other as one starts to wind down her career and the other blossoms. (despite just a 2-year age difference)
Oh, weird... Turns out she actually did perform in Bredene. She fought six rounds with a Frenchwoman, 11-1-2 featherweight EBU champ Licia Boudersa (http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/718233) - except it was made an exhibition and so it won't count on their pro records. Also no word on how it went.
Four years on since this very thread's creation, the undefeated march continues, extended now to a robust 31-0 (14) since Persoon's last defeat in 2010. Yesterday afternoon, overshadowed by a plethora of boxing action of which it wasn't even remotely the most notable match in women's boxing alone (that being HBO's swansong featuring Brækhus & Shields - along with Persoon forming the nucleus of top female p4p boxers in the world - and even that card was vastly overshadowed by Lomachenko vs. Pedraza on ESPN) she fought a rematch in Belgium with Judi Waguthii for her eighth WBC lightweight title defense. Waguthii, a teak-tough Kenyan whom Persoon had shut out in 2014, and who took on this assignment on a few days' notice as substitute, and who just twelve months ago held Svetlana Kulakova to a split decision in a try for the IBO 140lb title - had never been stopped in her career. Persoon knocked her out in round 10.
I see it as very similar to MAG vs. Spence, and just as in that one , the more technically skillful boxer (of whom I'm more of a fan) is probably up shit's creek against that much size, strength, and athleticism.
Yeah, I agree, but fingers crossed, maybe she can pull a Gabriels-Shields on her. As in, win in most observers eyes, and get robbed on the cards.
Who is Mikey and who is Spence in this analogy? Because Persoon is bigger than Taylor and Taylor is much, much more skilful and a heavy favourite.
Delfine has fought at super feather. Katie is a huge lightweight. Delfine has a higher boxing IQ. Katie is loads more naturally talented.
Women’s boxing sucks. Seriously. It’s not good. I’m all for them doing it and I’m not saying they shouldn’t. I’m just saying it’s bad.
Taylor is a tiny lightweight Fought at 132lbs in the amateurs. Super featherweight was the initial plan in the pros, was weighing in 132-133ish, but opportunity came up at lightweight. She's weighing in at 135lbs at the minute without any sort of a weight cut. Persoon's weigh-in figures hugely inconsistent, suggest either a lack of knowledge regarding weight cutting or inaccuracy in reporting/recording. Visually Persoon looks to be taller and more muscular than Taylor who carries a lot of weight in her legs Although I do take your point on IQ
I'm hoping her experience will win her the fight. She's been at the top for years now and sportswoman of the year in my country in 2015. Thats before Taylor's first pro bout even. That should count for something, hopefully...
