The Cooney that destroyed Norton, Lyle and Young (who was not washed up) and gave prime Holmes a good fight was a good fighter. Did he have flaws yes, he didn’t know how to react when hurt or clinch. His defense was suspect. But he was not the sideshow of the Spinks and Foreman fights. Gerri unfortunately was a rare commodity - a white American heavyweight that could have the potential to go far and most importantly- MAKE PEOPLE A LOT OF MONEY. He’s kind of like Wilder today only a lot better than Wilder. Wilder gets protected because not only does America not produce any quality white heavies anymore they don’t produce black ones either. Lennox Lewis pushed out the old last great generation of American Heavies and the K2 brothers put their foot on the throat of the following generation for over 12 years. That kind of dominance causes extinction. I happen to think the Cooney of the Norton fight and Holmes fight vs the Ruddock of the Tyson 1 fight would be an awesome bout. 50/50 for me.
Pure delusion. Cooney wouldn't get past the 1st rd with Wilder. Well, maybe. You know, against Laura Ingles Wilder. MAYBE.
Lol I had to google how that was but I doubt Wilder even gets in the ring with Cooney. Since he never even tried fighting Wlad or Joshua yet. Cooney smokes him in 1. That left hook to the body cuts Beyoncé in half
Great fight, could go either way. I think Ruddock was overall more reliable and I would pick him by a razor thin margin.
Really? You think he had less a chin than Morrison? Cooney took a few huge shots from Foreman before he went down. I would say his chin although shaky, was better than Morrison's, but Morrison had more heart / recovery and would get back up.
Cooney I reckoning gets the hard shots in first .In a edge of seat fight with both throwing caution to the wind ,Gerry has Ruddock down and out in the fifth .
Yes, he was ko'ed by Spinks, I saw Ruddock get up from Morrison's left hook that would have derailed a freight train.
Cooney would have been a much better 12 round fighter, but I can't see this fight going 10, let alone 12 or 15. I think Ruddock would snatch victory from the jays of defeat vs. Cooney. Much depends on Cooney's defense unless he lands his big left early. If Cooney had more confidence and just a decent trainer, I'd pick him. He had neither.
First off Cooney wasn't 6'6 he was more like 6'5. Second Cooney didn't punch nearly as hard as Morrison. Most people who fought Tyson and Morrison have stated Morrison punched harder than Tyson. Cooney didn't punch as hard as Tyson. Morrison gassed out in the Mercer fight so that means he had poor stamina. Typical casual fan logic. The same people who keep saying Foreman had poor stamina because he got tired in the Ali fight.
