You see him absolutely everywhere now, you can't seem to avoid him. My question is how good of a trainer is he really? Fowler - already had one loss, in a fight he was favourite for. Gill - already had one loss in a fight he was favourite for. Dave was off strolling around Vegas last week, where perhaps he should have been in the gym with Jordan and earning his 10%. G McDonell - no notable wins, apart from Yafai who really isn't that good. 2 notable losses. Jamie Mcdonell - 2 good wins over Kameda and a demolishing by Inoue nothing you cannot blame Dave for. Tony Bellew - No arguments here, although I do feel his best wins were when avoiding the instructions of Dave and fighting on instinct whilst he is getting screamed at in the corner to not get greedy. I just feel he is a bang average trainer, nothing more and nothing less. Although amongst the Sky lot he is revered as a Sheffield Virgil Hunter. You here so much about how tactically astute he is as a trainer but I just fail to see it. What are peoples thoughts?
He's a decent trainer, nothing special. But he does train anyone and everyone. Booth is best British trainer for me. But he wouldn't just train anyone, he'd be very selective with who he has in his stable. Never in a million years would he train McDonnell for example
Got lucky with Bellew but that was the fighters ability not the training but apart from that he’s not in my top trainer rankings but just average. Likes the camera and limelight it seems though which is always worrying! Seems a nice enough guy and seems to get on with his fighters but so do most trainers.
Everyone seems to want to be a mini celebrity nowadays. Even Dillian Whytes brother is all up in the videos like Diddy.
Yafai fight McDonnell was a 3 or 4 to 1 underdog, so he should get credit for that as the gameplan was spot on. His last world title fight he was actually starting to have some decent success and just cause caught (I didnt actually think it should of been stopped). So you cant blame Coldwell for that, tactics looked pretty good once again. Fowler lost by a point and to be fair, he didnt listen to Coldwell, which he even admitted. Tactics seemed fine but Fowler blew himself out throwing everything into every punch. Gill loss is questionable as you say though, some would say your tapering down in the week before, so easy enough to hand over to a second in charge. Some would say it's not acceptable. I think hes better then he gets credit for, his advice between rounds is usually very good to be fair. He's never had any true world stars in his gym, the fighters he does have though he hasn't made them any worse. Better trainer then Gallagher imo, more versatile.
I’m with you on this, I think he’s a bit underrated and like you say his advice is good in the corner. 100% wouldn’t blame him for the Fowler loss, Fowler was too emotionally invested in the fight and was done mentally by Fitz. He wanted to spark him out so bad that he wasn’t following any sort of game plan and Fowler will have to learn from that. The Gill loss is strange, I just think they didn’t have any sort of inclination that he was gonna lose so everything was done with a bit of a step back. Not necessarily right but I think they’re all shocked by what happened.
You know what, I wouldn’t say I dislike him. I just don’t think he’s a top trainer. I’ve already pointed out what I thought about the Gill situation. Let’s go back to Fowler, there was some plus points there. In the arena (not sure if it came across on TV) but fowler was dancing and smiling taking the **** when he got in the ring vs fitz and Coldwell (rightly) told him under no uncertain terms to pack it in. But during that fight to the surprise of many, the “machine” seemed to gas. That was the last thing anyone expected of Fowler so surely the trainer needs to be accountable for his fighters conditioning?
I don't think there was anything wrong with his conditioning per se, more to do with his emotionally invested he was in the fight which caused the early onset of fatigue. Thats part Fowler, part prep - so he takes some responsibility there IMO
This content is protected What is Coldwell's stable now then ? Hopey Price, Jordan Gill (surely done and retired?), Mohammed Ali, and Ebanie Bridges. A massive fall-off there. I wonder how he is living so comfortably to be honest.
Investments, promoted, and great pay whilst in corners for big fights As much as people give him stick, id say Dave is a shrewd fella
What an awful move by terrible teeth Bridges. Mark Tibbs obviously has far bigger fish to fry now with knock out waiting to happen Johnny Fisher etc and probably couldn’t give her the time her over sized ego needs.
