What you've described is in no way odd.

Famous man says something vaguely controversial.

Press asks a further question to attempt to stir up further controversy thereby achieving clicks.

The only thing odd here is Wilder's hyper-aggressive reaction.

At best you could compare Ali's reply to Parkinson over the "you work with a lot of white people" remark, but the difference in eloquence is marked.

What's controversial about a black man from Alabama telling reporters in the U.S. that his people were persecuted for hundreds of years?

    Please elaborate.

    Who isn't aware of that?

And Parkinson wasn't a U.S. reporter and his interview with Ali wasn't held in the U.S.

Race is controversial in the United States of America. On its own.

People go out of their way to avoid talking about it and people make careers out of talking about it for this specific reason.

A black man from Alabama saying his people were persecuted for a hundreds of years ... isn't usually followed by "How so?"

The only thing controversial was the reporter's question.

But there is nothing at all unusual about a reporter courting controversy from a public figure. It is absolutely normal in every conceivable way.

    Which is what I said.

The only thing that is odd about it is Wilder's extreme reaction.

    Which was my entire point.

What is it you are disagreeing with here, exactly?

It is not absolutely normal for a reporter who identifies himself as Radio Raheem (a fictional character murdered by white police officers) to ask a black man from Alabama what he means when he says black men from Alabama have been persecuted?

The normal reaction would be "WTF?"

And moments later, Raheem apologized to Wilder for being a dumbass and Wilder apologized for barking at him.

Again, all fighters get a bit testy right before a big fight. Those who don't publicly show it tend to be monsters to those around them. Nothing about Wilder's reaction was out of the norm, given the situation.

The joke is the reporter who asked the question was black. Radio Rahim.

We all know what Wilder is about. He is a clown. He wants attention. This is what happens when a low IQ person is given a lot of attention and money. He's like Chance the Gardener in Being There.
