Corbett makes him look like a fool for the early rounds but Baer catches up to him with something fierce in a monster right hand. He proceeds to batter a hurt Corbett across the ring en route to a KO Also i thought it was an unspoken rule to make the poll votes public
My preference is people explain their picks. Pubic voting I think discourages things a bit, but okay for the next time will go public. I like Corbett here. Baer was a terrible boxer. Corbett was too good and quick for him, and had a good enough chin to go many rounds with Choynski and Jackson, two pretty good punchers at a fast pace for 15+ rounds. Bear wasn't much of a body puncher, and that was the punch to stop Corbett. See Fitz or Jeffries II.
I was going to say one that'd easilly go either way for me. Baer is rather big and powerfull for Corbett. But Corbett is far more fleet footed than Braddock, and harder to catch. Despite ranking Baer higher, I think Corbett can do this, I think he would more than he wouldn't
Loughran out boxed a young Baer.Braddock did it when Max had damaged hands and had neglected his training, but Braddock could dig a bit with his own right.Corbett did not have any power.I have a feeling Baer would catch Corbett at some point and that would be enough .
Is Baer trying to win, or is his giving away the fight like he did against Braddock? If he's trying to win, he stops Corbett
I don't put too much stock in the Choynski fights.Though he hadn't had many official fights Corbett had fought dozens of exhibitions and sparred with lots of pros,he was much more the finished article when they fought than Choynski imo. Jackson wasnt a big puncher by all accounts. I don't think Corbett was particularly durable in body or chin.
I would favor Baer, and my reasoning is as follows. While Corbett gave everybody fits, the best punchers that he fought got him eventually. Yes he beat an ageing shell of Sullivan, but Fitzsimmons caught up with him, Sharkey caught up with him, and Jeffries caught up with him. My guess is that if Baer turns up to fight, he probably looses some rounds, but eventually drops the M bomb!
Max would be to strong/ fast/ large for Corbett over 15 rounds . If this fight was over 15 rounds post Baer killing Cambell in the ring, then Corbett gains the upper hand over time. A 25 round fight favors Jim Prior to Cambells death , this may end in tragedy as Maxies right hand could do serious damage, and Corbett would never quit. Max would stop and hurt Corbett within 8 rounds. He was a ferocious puncher before Cambells death took the fight out of him.
I'm not a massive appreciator of Corbett, but I understand he could move and Baer was outboxed on multiple occasions. But Corbett never faced power as good as Baer's, who I seem to rate higher than most. I think Corbett wins all the rounds, but then Baer catches him with a blistering overhand that Corbett can't take Baer by Brutal, Face Shredding, Disgusting KO
My understanding is Corbett was not only much more experienced but more successful as an amateur. I've found amateur 6 fights for Choynski,Corbett won more than that amount of Pacific Coast titles plus the Golden Gloves. Corbett beat many unnamed minor opponents in the San Francisco, Ca area -Corbett became a Golden Gloves Champion and won seven Silver Championship Cups in amateur boxing on the Pacific Coast -Corbett beat some professional boxers in the San Francisco, Ca area
