You are absolutely right. They definitely should be.

 

Once you're a belt holder, you automatically are removed from any mandatory position of a competing sanctioning body. This 'rule' creates this alphabet soup mess we're in since the 70s/80s.

 

What madballster said. Also, you are only guaranteed 25% of the purse as a mandatory, which is much too low a percentage for either fighter.

Key point is that the belt is vacant. It’s a champion with another organisation against a mandatory challenge, not 2 champions. Never gonna happen.

 

Canelo was ordered to fight GGG while they were both Champions and Canelo vacated

 

GGG was interim champion though and they wanted the belt won outright, it’s again slightly different.

 

That was because Golovkin held the 'interim' WBC title, making him the mandatory for the full title which Canelo held.
