Finally got round to watching this! Cracking wee fight. The first two rounds were close with Herrera working behind a jab putting together combinations and Castillo looking to slip inside with left hook counters. Herrera was more straighter with his punches and this gave him the advanatges in the exchanges IMO, but Castillo hit harder and did the cleaner shots. Basically every two round couplet was split either way. In the third Herrera set up some nice combo's with his pecking left jab and generally made Castillo fall short with his counters by controlling the distance with that jab and staying upright. In the fourth Castillo got off first by slipping inside with either a jab or a left hook to head or body to set up some sharp combinations or to set up a stinging counter-punch. In the next two rounds Herrera got some dominance as he got off first with his jab and set up those nice combinations and applying consistent pressure to set up some lovely body attacks. In the seventh Herrera put together his combo's but Castillo was able to counter with his left hooks and over hand rights to do some damage and Castillo was able to get off first with his jab and really drove it home to keep Herrera off balance. In the eighth Herrera put those combo's together quickly which quelled any chance of Castillo getting counter's off and Herrera threw some lovely 1-2-left hook combo's. In the ninth and tenth the action picked up with Herrera putting his shots together and Castillo landing the hard counters. It was basically what you preferred - workrate or the quality punching. I split these two rounds. Castillo took over late IMO when he woke up and began throwing his left jab out there and applying pressure on Herrera, although the eleventh was really close as Herrera had a superb jab. The twelfth was a war but Castillo landed some very hard punches to rock Herrera twice and take the round. Herrera: 1,3,5,6,9,10 Castillo: 2,4,7,9,11,12 Total: 114-114 Draw (6-6) The decision could have went either way IMO. I thought Herrera won his rounds slightly more clearly but Castillo showed the better skillset on the whole although his work was less consistent.
I agree with Greg, more or less. I thought Castillo was slightly the better man when I viewed it, though I didn't score it. edit: It appears I already stated the same in this very thread. Nevermind then.
I'm away to watch Herrera vs Olivares II now, since it was discussed in this thread I'll post my thoughts in here.
Well, that's pretty cool. I saw Herrera/Castillo on TV way back when and have Olivares/Herrera 1 on tape. Wales as in Cardiff/Great Britian?

Right here is my take on Herrera vs Olivares II Herrera: 1,3,6,7 Olivares:2,4,5,8,9,10 KD'd 7 Total: 95-94 Olivares (6-4) Very nice fight this. Herrera starts the bout well behind a nice jab and blocking Olivares shots well. Herrera can be a very nice stand up stylist at times when he relaxes and box's. The pace picks up in the second as Olivares is accurate with his shots and steps in with some lovely left hooks to head and body. This is definitely a fight where Olivares has to box as in the third Herrera presses the action with hard hooks, with some corkers to the body. In the fourth Herrera keeps pressuring but Olivares has nice lateral movement and counters superbly. In the fifth Olivares continues his good movement and gets in and out with fast and hard combo's. Herrera has some success to the body but Olivares is in charge. In the sixth Herrera puts his shots together and lands some hard combo's and Olivares contains control but I liked the harder shots of Herrera. In the seventh Herrera has a good round as he drops Olivares with a left hook. Herrera shows good head movement and gets his combo's off well from slips. In the eighth Olivares gets off first with snappy shots that keep Herrera off-balance. In the ninth the action really picks up as they both land hard shots, Olivares boxes well and mixes in occasional power-shots as he moves and jabs and Herrera does well getting inside from combinations - very close round. In the final stanza Herrera is accurate with his combo's but Olivares takes charge with his own solid combo's and drops Herrera (although ruled slip) and ends it in the ascendancy. In the fight when Olivares was boxing, it is some of the best feinting I have ever seen. Herrera really struggled to time him at times.
Just watched this. Excellent, highly skilled fight. I had it 7-5 Castillo. Close but clear for Castillo for me. Thanks McGrain!!

I've seen this fight about 3 times now and I always seem to pick up some subtle nuances, mostly from Castillo. The first two times I saw it I had Herrera in front. What I notice now is that you cannot make a mistake against Castillo or he will have you on the counter punch. If you miss or leave yourself open or get complacent he will have you on the counter-punch. So this turned into a hard-punching chess match. There were a few issues with the youtube video that I saw it on last time, which would freeze up for a few seconds just about every round. You can hear the commentary continuing during the freeze-up and then it would start in normal time, so I missed a few seconds and in this fight with every round so close that's a bit nerve-wracking. Anyways here we go. California scoring of 1 point for a round and none for even rounds. Herrera-Castillo II Round 1: Even Round 2: Castillo Round 3: Herrera Round 4: Castillo (the video on this round was only about a minute and a half) Round 5: Herrera Round 6: Castillo Round 7: Castillo Round 8: Herrera Round 9: Herrera Round 10: Herrera (the freeze-up in this round lasted about 15 seconds) Round 11: Castillo Round 12: Even 5-5 Draw The freeze-ups were infuriating because a fight this close can be determined by what you're missing. Round 4 and 10 were obviously an issue. But a great fight.
