Yeah but he probably needs tough fights before the canelo fight to prepare him. Heck he hasnt had a tough fight in his career, Groves was the biggest challenge but he was old and injured.
His career is literally dying before our eyes. With that high profile KO of George Groves, he should be fighting the very best and be in relevant career defining fights. This is just a marking time fight and not going to take him forward at all.
Its incredibly poor management i agree. Unless you're a hardcore boxing fan you'ld have no idea he's making his American debut in a few days time (against a chinny MW). He's not being marketed poorly - he's not being marketed at all ! Even if the fight with Ginger nuts does go ahead, Smith has built up no profile so in US so will get only a small fraction of the purse. Right now he's wasting his prime.
He had a baby and chose to take some time off as he did not want it to impact his career and wanted to spend some time with his family, he also earned millions in the WBSS and apparently wants big money to keep fighting. My understanding was he wanted a tune up which being a champion would still need to be a Top 15 fighter and the DAZN money is the only thing that allowed him to do that besides PPV which he did not want to jump straight back into. From what i am hearing its N'dam ( who was the only available fighter who had a bit of a profile in U.S) and then he wants the Canelo or GGG fight if possible as plan A. If not Plan B is his mandatory against Ryder in a PPV in UK and then a unification in the US against one of the American champs. He will then move up to light heavy.
