Satterfield was said to be about 5"10 but much shorter than Valdez and shorter than Ezzard Charles but your right against Nino you can see the size difference

Floyd may have been around that size-5'10-5'11 he was a normal looking guy, kind face and smiling eyes.

Frazier may have been about 5'9-5'10 but a scary looking dude head, neck, shoulders, I was at a party with him and Holmes and Holmes was big but Frazier was wide and strong and serious- Tyson was short but another freaky looking guy- Im a strong guy with not much fear but I would need a gun for them and at least a 9mm

another rough, musular dude was Jersey Joe Walcott and he was 50-60 when I met him a shade over 6" maybe 6 '1/2 but rugged head and neck

I think it is clear Floyd was smaller than all of the heavyweights of his time. This means he did good at heavyweight. The men he fought were ranked in that division. Jackson, Harris, Johansson, Machen, Cooper, Chuvalo, Bonavena, Quarry Ellis, Ali and Liston. He appeared shorter and thinner than all of the men he fought while fighting them, even the ones he was listed as being close to in size.

If his height was not accurate, how accurate was his weight? Did he weigh in wearing weighted shoes?

Evidence could point toward him being a guy who really could have made lightheavyweight if he wanted to his whole career.

If that was the case this could be more important. It is far more impressive that a smaller fighter be so successful in spite of being small.

Floyd has fast hands -execution was quick with power shots- probaly one of the fastest hands with power on the punch, he had his flaws-self-esteem low at times and head shots dropped him but pretty skilled on the offensive- look at his ingo KO's leeping hook also quick hook to KO Archie- most say he beat Ellis (who dropped Bonavena x2) he got dropped by Quarry but survived. I think the pressure punchers like, Marciano,Frazier,Tyson,Louis,Dempsey would take him out and he would lose to Charles, Walcott but Floyd was gifted

As far as musculature goes I was always impressed by his muscles, what do you call them? (the ones above the tit and below the neck.
    All hail my hero!
I'd also heard that one of Floyd's legs was 1/2"-3/4" shorter than the other which might explain, given his leaping attacks, his multiple KD's.

I honestly don't think Floyd could have remained a LH; he was the epitome of a 'tweenie'.

He was 6 foot unless you want to take away 2 inches from ALL of his contemporaries.

No doubt he did well at heavyweight as he was champion. But of the names you listed, Patterson did not beat Liston or Ali, or even be that competitive with them, nor did he beat Quarry or Ellis. Of the men he did beat, Johansson was 206 for their third fight--12 lbs. above what he had been nine months earlier and so probably flabby. Bonavena was 206. Chuvalo 208 when Patterson defeated them.

But this is no more impressive beating big men than all sorts of smaller men. Archie Moore beat bigger good men in Valdes, Baker, Lavorante, Cestak, Parker. Harold Johnson beat Valdes, Gilliam, and Peaks. Satterfield beat Valdes, Baker, Williams, and Holman. Loughran in the old days beat Baer and Schaaf, as well as giants like Campolo and Impellitierre.

Sure, Floyd was fairly successful, but all the good men he beat were 208 or less, and most under 200 lbs. Not remarkable really.

As for Patterson not being as big as he was listed either in height or weight, I don't know.

Well yes. Laughran, Moore, Harold Johnson And Satterfeild beat even bigger men than Floyd did, but unlike Floyd was, Moore, Satterfeild and co were not regarded as the best “heavyweight” in the world whilst doing it.

Altogether Floyd was at the top of the heavyweight division for a very long time. He won the title in 1956 and was not done making an impression on the undisputed title until 1963. All this whilst being the kind of guy who could still make lightheavyweight had he wanted to.

    It is incredible really.

So whilst others beat bigger men - they were not the best men. Floyd was beating the best men. Jackson and Moore were both #1 contenders. Harris #3. London #4. Johansson was also the #1 contender, and Floyd knocked him out two out of three times.

I don’t buy that it must be a poor heavyweight period if most of the top ten weighed less than 220. There were enough guys that big doing the rounds. The cream still rises to the top. Only one guy that big rose to the top. Sonny Liston. But Sonny Liston wasn’t just good because he was big. The guy was great too. He had to beat the guys Patterson fought like Harris and Machen to prove it.

Pictures are horribly inaccurate due to angles and postures, especially pictures of old men. Measurements are the only semi-scientific basis upon which to compare. You either take the preponderance as equally valid or dismiss the lot. You do not get to pick and choose.

There are many photos of Frazier with Patterson as young men and as old men. Floyd is always shorter than Joe. ALWAYS.

    Marciano was 5'9"
    Frazier more like 5'10"
    And Ali was 6'2"

Boxing heights are often exaggerated for some reason (actually, heights in sports are often exaggerated).
