1996 Holyfield vs prime Jack Dempsey

Trolling or ******ed?

 

Man, if you look at some (comparatively) high resolution photos from that fight, it gives you an idea of how much better it would look with modern cameras:

I do not see how Dempsey wins this.
He depended on brute force when he would be outweighed by thirty lbs. of muscle.
Holyfield as a great 19O fighter, before all the weights & PED's, a great swarmer like Jack has a very good chance.
But Willard was long inactive, soft, & did not have top notch skill. Still Dempsey tired early.

Give them both the same training & nutrition choices, it may be anoyone's fight.

 

In the ring he was as brave as they come. One area where Dempsey May be under rated was his courage and heart. Paul Gallico writes about it in detail in his unique and fascinating portraits of Jack that were pretty complex and analytical. Outside the ring Dempsey was a much harder man from a harder life.

 

Anyone would have tired at that pace in the heat.

If there's a critisism it's much more his pacing

 

Dempsey showed pretty terrific stamina as well as late round power against Brennan and went a fast fifteen after a long hiatus against a terrific Gibbons ... he may have come close to punching himself out vs Willard but I'd have bet he had more in him for a second wind if needed ... the real question is if Willard survives the early blitz and rebounds if Dempsey was not allowed to mug him.

 

Using a "fast paced" 15 rounds against a lightheavy who had ZERO qualifications as a heavyweight (and in fact lost what was to be an elimination bout for a title challenge) in no way an endorsement of stamina against an elite, champion calibre heavyweight. I am much more impressed with Holy's efforts against Dokes and Bowe 1.

 

The great holyfield would gas out...too much weight training

 

exciting fight for sure, Dempsey went to the body well, liver shots and mean as they come. Evander had the heart of a lion but both men prime very hard to say. I think Jack would love a fighter to come to him but Evander would give him angles. I remember Jack getting dropped by the wild Firpo and remeber Evander getting dropped by Bert Cooper both got up to win. Body shots may be the key for Jack but this fight is 2 ATG's so hard for me to be certain. I would bet its is an exciting explosive fight!!

 

Dempseys will to win was second to none....his years of hunger and desperation helped to guarantee this.....not even a holyfield ever had to go hungry and ride the rods...as dempsey once said he became "an animal. "... Suffice to say, holyfield was tough

 

Holy was much bigger and stronger than Gibbons and would have thrown far more counters.

 

Holy said he was better at blocking shots that came around like Tyson and Dempsey`s hooks, even though he was caught by a lot of Foreman`s straight punches, Dempsey was still easier to hit with the jab than Holy was because he often dipped his head forward`s bringing him closer to his opponents lead hand, Holy would land a lot of jabs in this one. I pick Holy here.

 

Going to have to go against my first impression and pick Holyfield in a fantastic up and down fight. Dempsey could really put the hurt on in bursts, he could also move. But Holyfiled was an excellent counter puncher and he could survive those amazing combos in segments.

Dempsey will have the upper hand in the early rounds, but Holyfiled is a grinder and survivor, he will weather the early barrages and fast exchanges to even the fight in the mid rounds He then starts getting the better of Dempsey in the final rounds pulling out a SD win on the cards.

Great fight.

 

I think perhaps a way to get to holyfield would be consistant body shots perhaps
