I rate Walcott below Liston but above Holyfield.

It's a sad reflection on an era when a journeyman is able to climb so high.

Charles had just turned 30 and was on a dominating two year run as Heavyweight Champion.

Louis and Walcott were the same age, 33.

Both Louis and Charles were reigning HW Champions with no signs of slowing down.

    "Age and depleted" is baseless.

A 9 year period where Walcott established himself as a concrete contender, fought in 8 World Title Fights, and captured the HW title. You are describing as journeyman....

Journeyman can become contenders just as contenders can become journeyman. There are no constants in boxing, are you new to the sport or any sport for that matter?

Wow, this is honestly hard to understand.

in the first instance Lists & Ratings and all such Stats: ARE Useful, yes they are... BUT they are no where near Stamped Absolute.

ATG are GREATS are Greats are greats and there ARE Hundreds, even Thousands of Fighters over the last 150 years that ARE Among Them!

now, Jersey Joe Walcott - He IS without question Among the Very Best/Top of these Men!!!

Posted to the other JJW thread but protean to this conversation...

Dec 6, 1947... Washington Evening Star, Burton Hawkin..."Jersey Joe Walcott, 34-year old journeyman heavyweight and ebony-hued father of six"

June 22, 1948... Milwaukie Journal, R. G. Lynch..."For Walcott is strictly a second rater, a journeyman boxer working at a trade. He knows his trade well, but he has practiced is always for survival rather than for the greatest success..."

Nov 30, 1947... Milwaukie Journal, R.G. Lynch... "(Walcott) a journeyman fighter who wants to stay in the business..."

June 23, 1948... Plain Dealer, Gordon Cobbled*ck (love that name) "(Walcott) is only lately come to be recognized as a fair journeyman operator after 17 years of ring warfare."

May 24, 1946 AP preview of Walcott Oma begins... "A couple of journeyman heavyweights who have lost the first flush of youth..."

I could go on and on and on... It is the most common descriptor of Walcott. And continued to be such into the 1950's.
