Did anybody else realize that he was, somehow, currently on a 2½ year, 7-0 (6) W streak? The last I knew he was in a horrible slump and only getting sanctioned in dark corners of the globe, having been stopped a frightful number of times by mediocrities that wouldn't have been fit to carry his jockstrap in his prime. In that slump, from 2008 until 2014, he went 6-19, with ten losses by stoppage. As expected, he finally dialed the quality of his opposition way down, to walking corpse level, to get himself a positive result on the scoreboard. He did this a few times after his most recent defeat (to, humiliatingly, 50-something German never-was Andreas Sidon), receiving little to no fanfare, including a rematch with Martin Stensky - a guy he KO1ed in the midst of that 6-19 doldrums. Just a few months ago, however, Danny actually knocked out a bloke with a 24-0 (22) record!! Granted, it was only 42 year old Boban Filipović of Serbia (not exactly a boxing hotbed, outside Muamer Hukić aka Marco "Kap'n" Huck)...but still. That's encouraging. For this momentous occasion he managed to even get his weight under 270lbs! Power is the last to go, and in Williams' case, literally all else has gone by now. If he comes in even remotely decent shape, fair to expect he can make shards of any glass-jawed yokels haplessly chucked into the gladiatorial arena with him. But why tempt fate? In a matter of weeks now, Danny will turn 46 years old. I don't think he is going to be able to retire on a higher note than TKO3 Filipović at this point. Does anybody happen to know his financial situation? Why don't any of the British television stations that air boxing offer him a commentating gig? He's well-liked enough domestically, and could provide some "colour", even just in the odd segment in studio if not actually calling the shots analyzing live fights. Or is he just banging on from sheer pride & stubbornness, wanting to separate himself from that miserable slump? If the latter is the case, I believe you've made your point now, Danny Boy. Hang 'em up, please, while you still have the fine motor skills to do so...
Yeah I noticed this too recently. Exposing Boban Filipovic is a nice scalp at this point even though the Serb has a horrifically padded record. Williams should retire finally but probably won't. Danny has definitely always been well liked. I remember he had a fan website made for him that popped up in the early 00s(not sure it exists anymore?) Williams probably should have retired 10-11 years ago. His last REAL scalp of any worth is Airich, he lost both of the McDermott fights. If memory serves right the last time he showed ability at any real level was during the Charr fight which he had some flashes in. After that fight though his soul left his body and thus began the sad story of the once competent fringe contender becoming a sad shot to **** low level journeyman who had to travel to Eastern Europe in order to fight.
Remember what an uphill battle it was to even notch that W over Airich? (mostly due to corrupt officiating) He's lucky to even have that as his last gasp. Really he only has three "very good" victories since Tyson fifteen years ago: when he snatched the zeroes of Harrison, Skelton and Gammer in a 15-month period.
ahhh, the golden era of domestic boxing. we got all time classics between skelton, williams, audrey, sprott, rogan and sugar tits mcdermott. and people say the uk heavyweight scene is on fire today.
I recall reading an interview where he said he can't afford to stop boxing until both his daughters are through British private school which can be very costly. He insisted he couldn't send them to public schools because that wouldn't offer them any proper career prospects. I think at the time of writing they were 13/14 but that was years ago. They should be close to graduation now. It touched my heart hearing that from a father, but my God this guy has taken punishment in the ring. I sincerely hope these two daughters know and appreciate their father is literally risking his life for them.
Great thread @IntentionalButt Some good posts in this thread, Ive said it many times but Danny is such a nice bloke, my kids met him and fell in love with him, the guy has such a positive aura you just enjoy spending time with him. The guy is a lion. A true warrior and is in my top 10 fighters of all time. He has been in some great fights that I watched with people who are no longer here yet Danny is still throwing them hands in that ring. I really do get why he is carrying on boxing...its not just about the money. Boxing is all he knows. The man LOVES it. Whatever he decides I will respect and support but I hope he hangs the gloves up and gets into the training side
I know, entitling myself to a bit of creative license in reformatting. I'm not a fan of alliteration.
I heard / was told that he was boxing in a show up north, not sure if it is sanctioned by the bbbc or if it is some sort of exhibition.
Hmmmm. Checked Boban Filipovics boxrec just now and he set to fight Marino Goles this Friday. Fellow Balkan/Slavic glass cannon HW can crusher but a rival Croatian. Pretty even matchup. Terribly low level but looking forward to seeing how this one pans out. 50/50 fight.
He should follow in the footsteps of his KO victim Mark Potter and do something like this. By the accounts I've seen here and elsewhere I doubt he's have much issue with it. This content is protected
I’ll always remember the fights he had with mark potter and sinan samil sam Last I remember seeing of Williams was him getting stopped by Chisora some years ago now, he should’ve hung them up then really
Still remember him getting lifted up in the air by a Tyson uppercut in round 1 and then coming back to stop him
