I would certainly say that Mace was better.

Mace dominated in what seems to have been a much stronger era, albeit there wasn't a monster like Sullivan running around.

I agree that Mace was a bit bigger.

Yes, I think he could be ranked around the same place as Kid McCoy, or even a bit higher.

No. There have been more than 100 fighters who were better than Charley Mitchell in the last 130 years. He wasn't even the best fighter when he was fighting.

By that logic, everyone on a p4p list doesn't deserve to be there because they aren't the heavyweight champ

It's really between him and Dempsey, and I think there's definitely a case for Mitchell being higher, though I'd probably pick Dempsey

Since the comparison with Mace was brought up, I think it's worth discussing if he deserves inclusion. I think yes, though I'm not entirely sure where. His fight with Sam Hurst was very impressive, as are his wins over Tom Allen and Joe Goss. I don't see it brought up much but he was a really good wrestler, out wrestling Goss and throwing the much larger Hurst. But on the other hand he really lost the series with Tom King IMO, who wasn't that much heavier, and the saga with Coburn is pretty unflattering.

I think the big problem is if you include him you'd have to look into loads of other bareknuckle guys like Belcher, Sayers and Dutch Sam, with the extra difficulty of learning about the bareknuckle eras you'd probably be more than doubling your work, so unless you're willing to spend several years on it, you're probably best just making the criteria only gloved boxers

I'd also pick the Nonpariel. Do you know why they never fought?

Nonpariel was close to invincible in his prime, though he never fought a monster like Sullivan

Probably Nonpariel via UD over 10 and stoppage over 20-25

Bareknuckle would be a toss up.

I couldn't say the exact reasons, there was a lot of talk about it. I think they both said they wanted it and accused each other of ducking them, but that was stuff I read ages so I wouldn't put much faith in it.

Mitchell vs Jem Smith bareknuckle would've been interesting too.

Though Mitchell seemed to have a knack for turning enermies into friends.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't Mitchell one of Kilrain's seconds against Sullivan? (Though I think Donovan was his main one)

Yep, and Kilrain was coming off a win against Jem Mace too iirc
