When describing a fighters style as "cute." I think I first heard Max Kellerman use it. That is a word I'll never in a million years use to describe a boxer
Gymnasium Really fancies the job Has a solid look about him Bang on the chin Looks the part His legs have gone These are hurtful punches etc. etc.
" Boxers have evolved since the days of Marciano and Ali" Can't stand the phrase, so wrong. Advances in sports science, training techniques, the rise of other professional sports and demographics are responsible for the current state of boxers abilities, and no, modern boxers are not better than boxers of the past by default and vice versa. Nothing to do with evolution. Kind of weird, but that one really gets to me.
Evolution does play a factor though. For example, the average human is taller by a couple inches now, compared to the early 1900s. Seeing a heavyweight taller than about 6’ 3” used to rare.
Is that a cliche? To me, it's just a word being used in its lesser-known sense - cute defined as cunning (derived from acute), rather than pretty. A bit affected maybe, but not really a cliche.
“Ring IQ” not only is it overused, but it’s offensive, because it insinuates the other boxer doesn’t have it. Some would argue how high could your Ring IQ be to step in a Square Circle (another cliche), knowing you may not leave with the same faculties you stepped in the ring with.
I'd take the side of the argument that that's down to diet and exercise. And I'd also question the statistic. Often times people quote north american or shall i say regional statistics when in fact the global stats are quite different. I might be swayed if you could demonstrate an environmental impetus driving said "evolution" such as, "as food sources grew ever higher the human animal had to adapt in turn", but current so called growth can be attributed to nutrition. There are cases in history where in China, no offense but whose people are considered on average shorter than a North American, archeologists determined average height to be 6'2" or something like that and it was attributed to the much healthier local diet. I also understand that a 6'3" heavy used to be rare, but now populations are much larger and there is therefore many more people 6"3" and over boxing now. A larger talent pool to draw from. And again I refer to my original argument that average size getting bigger is due to diet and nutrition. Definition of evolution 1a : descent with modification from preexisting species : cumulative inherited change in a population of organisms through time leading to the appearance of new forms : the process by which new species or populations of living things develop from preexisting forms through successive generations Evolution is a process of continuous branching and diversification from common trunks. This pattern of irreversible separation gives life's history its basic directionality.
"Glass jaws exist in boxing" - of course they do you 'chin checking' morons but so do decent punchers and not every stoppage loss is indicative of a 'glass jaw'.
