I definitely give Cooney a decent chance to win this. Prime Cooney had more than the left hook, he could jab, uppercut with that left, and was a helluva bodypuncher. BTW he did have a bit of power in his right also. Ken Norton said the first punch that Cooney hurt him with was a right hand.
This is grand. Cooney beats Wlad but loses to Razor Ruddock?.....Really? So Razor Ruddock would steam roll Wlad...... Did I wake up in bizarro world? https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/gerry-cooney-vs-razor-ruddock.629100/
Marvelous post! Said everything I was going to type. Cooney is monstrously overrated but In this instance Klits getting licked.
The problem with your analogy is that Pulev has NEVER knocked out a world class heavyweight in his entire career. For all his faults, Cooney clearly had fight ending power.
Both the Klits destroy Cooney. Wlad is a master of distance and that is the key. Cooney will not get in close enough to use his hook early. Wlad was faster as well, and his hard , accurate shots will quickly get Cooney loose. He will likley land a straight right that starts the ending, he would then quickly land precise and hard punches in a combination. His power shots are far to much and this ends early. Wlad KO 2 or 3 Vitali is probably the greatest H2H heavy of all time. He is made of Iron and Nails, Cooney will land his shots, but Vitali will weather any storm the powerful Cooney can conjure. Vit will then procede to walk him down. Cooney does not have the defense to stop Vitali from driving him all around the ring and keeping him off balance. The fight ends with Cooney trapped on Q_ueer Street Corner and the ref has to step in. Vitali KO 4
I don't think its hate (maybe by some). IMO, he's always been a very vulnerable fighter. Cooney and Ruddock would be very dangerous opponents for him.
In what fight was Wlad a master of distance? Funny how you say Cooney would have a better chance of hitting Vitali who was the better brother at controlling range. Who was Wlad a master of distance against?
If Cooney blitzes which he was good at......fast starts he has a chance otherwise the straight fast punches of Wlad drops him much much harder than the Holmes shot that stunned him....Cooney had good straight fundamentals his bread and butter was combinations with copious hooks to the head and body and uppercuts
Pre Stewart Wlad has very little chance in a bout with Cooney (Norton). Steward Wlad could win a decision, and he likely would.
