Though he lost, I struggle to find anyone else who'd beat FOTC Ali besides Frazier. Though still rusty, this was arguably his best career performance. That goes double for Frazier. He was a human tank that night! Their's nobody who ever lived who'd have an easy time with these men.. That being said, who would've beaten more of history's heavyweights?
Ali was a better boxer than Frazier during his 60`s prime, better combo`s, defense, speed etc. Ali was flabby in the fight of the century and slower than when he fought Cleveland Williams when his moves were amazing.
He wasn't that far from his prime, he would have been dancing and moving against any pressure fighting heavyweight besides for Frazier. Joe just didn't let him dance or create the space necessary to do so.
There`s a film study showing how Marciano used short quick shuffling feet going towards an opponent cutting distance to land his hook compared to Frazier in his third fight with Ali where Frazier just walked in, Marciano would have destroyed Ali in this condition.
I agree with the second part of your statement but Ali was in good condition for Frazier. He weighed about 215.
Joe all day money. FOTC Ali was flawed and looked mad at himself half the time. Frazier's peak, easily.
Probably FOTC Ali imo. Though not the best version of Ali, he still had superior versatility to Frazier. I'd give him a better chance than Joe against Liston and Foreman for example.
Perfect summing up which I agree with. Ali '71 would have handled Mike Tyson better too. I was watching FOTC for the umpteenth time the other day and that last round still has me gasping ! Two exhausted men in there - Only Joe could find a left hook like he did at that point in the fight and only Muhammad could have got up from it.
