I am not a Joshua, Wilder or Fury fan but Joshua actually did show heart by getting up and making a valiant effort and catching Ruiz with some very good clean shots, which only seemed to light a fire under Ruiz and make him want to exchange with Joshua.. We must also praise the heart and chin of Ruiz, the left that put Ruiz down in the 3rd round was one hell of a shot that would have stopped most Joshua opponents.

Yeah AJ was under enormous pressure, he always is being the biggest face of boxing. He was fighting the crowd, the pressure to perform given Wilders last fight, his US debut, and the hard impacts from Ruiz Jr shot.

He felt all that pressure more once he got knocked down, before that he was fine, did what he was supposed to do to Ruiz Jr and suprisingly Ruiz got up and fought on.

 

I guess you could argue it was over after the first knock down, he never recovered but fought on bravely. but to me he didn't have the same fire he had against Klitschko, It didn't seem like the hunger was there and he kind of gave up at the end. it was an odd finish, he spat his gum shield out so it was clear he didn't want to, or couldn't continue. you just have to wonder, when he is taking all those punches, when does the fighter in him give up? its kind of being glossed over a bit, but it did appear to me he just gave up.

 

I mean, it really looked like he quit at the end. I hope he was just concussed and confused, or at least thinking that he could get away with stalling for more time without the ref calling him on it.

 

All of Joshua's opponents were old men and tomato cans. So because that punch would of stopped them really doens't prove much does it?

 

Pretty low bench marks for heart. To me heart is taking a monstrous shot to the face and still brushing it off as nothing and keep going in the fight. Something the likes of Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Holyfield, Tyson, and even Lewis showed in their careers. They don't produce them anymore.

 

Compare the round 12 knockdown in fury wilder to the last knockdown in aj v Ruiz. AJ was barely marked up.

Fury showed real grit, AJ has a heart of glass. Classic when the bully finally gets bullied.

 

I think it was over after the first knockdown as well. Having a guy eat 7-8 of your best punches and than blowing your legs out with one is probably pretty disheartening. He’s usually a pretty adaptable fighter but he’s never had to deal with an opponent who comes out better every time he tries to exchange, and punishes him for every single power shot he throws. I have a feeling if he’d continued he would’ve been brutally knocked out- he was gassed and hurt. He quit, I’m not sure if it was an entirely conscious decision given how he was reacting, but I think it probably saved him taking a more devastating loss than if he hadn’t. And it’s pretty bad the way it is.

 

Showing heart = not quitting. Maybe you also think getting dropped equals not getting floored too?

 

Which is saying something about the heavyweight division considering he probably has a better resume than the other top heavyweight 's in the division. The welterweight division is where it's at and has been for many years.
