Berts chances here are probably not all great .. but as we've seen lately, anything can happen in boxing . The Cooper that put Holyfield down up against Floyd , who didn't have the greatest of Chin , with all respect . What happens ..15 round s ?
Now that is a fun matchup. If the Bert from the Dewitt ir Mercer fight shows up he just might get Patterson out of there.
I've gotta say ,I'm favourite Floyd BUT not overly confident in it .I can see ur post playing out like that , Patterson down , maybe a few times , then Floyd coming back to stop his man . But just as equal ,I can imagine Bert really hurting Floyd and Patterson being stopped .I'm undecided ..
Cooper of the Mercer, Coffee, DeWit fights would have had a great chance of catching Patterson and putting him to sleep. Of course, FP was a better boxer and history will remember him more fondly than Cooper but make no mistake, Bert, when in the mood was a fearsome puncher with fast hands and a solid chin.
This. Patterson most likely gets dropped once or twice, but I see Patterson eventually knocking Cooper out.
Well here's the thing: by all accounts Cooper could really wallop despite being around 210 in top shape, and he had really fast hands so Floyd's speed advantage is going to be undercut somewhat. I'd pick Floyd without too much hesitation if I knew he had a granite chin or if Bert's was glass, but as it stands I have to pick Cooper if I'm honest.
A determined and clean Cooper could take Patterson's punches better than Floyd could take his. Patterson was quicker and more skilled but he wasn't that elusive. He was also as short as Bert was. That means Cooper is gonna be inside. Patterson may outscore 3-1 up until he is rendered helpless. Cooper KO 6
But you could turn that comment around a couple of ways. Some one could also say ,who was the best fighter who Ingo beat ? Apart from Floyd of course . With out Patterson s name on his record , who'd he ever really beat ? Another way is , looking at Buster Douglas .If he'd never been given a shot at Tyson , what s the best name on his resume , same for McCall if he'd never faced Lewis . Just cos he never had the big name win , doesn't mean he stood no chance against Floyd .
Well Ingo knocked out Eddie Machen in 1 round and Henry Cooper in 5, Machen in particular is a good win, Cooper decent.
But he wasn't setting the world afire as such before facing Patterson .He was given not much chance at all of beating Floyd . The only thing he had going for him was a good punch but part from that , nothing .If we transport Bert in place of Ingo ,I give him a shot .
Bert was dangerous but I’d have to back the higher class of fighter and that was undoubtedly Patterson in this match up. Bert was an exciting fighter and a dangerous puncher but he wasn’t elite. The only guys that beat Patterson at his best were thunderous punchers at the world level in Ingo and Liston. Cooper wasn’t in that class in my view as a puncher or fighter. It’s seems a given on this site that anyone with a semi-decent KO ratio or a couple of highlight reel KO’s in an otherwise ordinary record will be given a chance out of proportion to their abilities against Floyd Patterson and also Kenny Norton.
We should start turning to the greatest upsets in heavyweight history in order to make picks for fighters who never pulled any really great upsets off. Makes sense.
