Agreed. That's my reasoning as well. Thick neck muscles mean that a punch has more resistance to overcome before setting the head into motion, probably also reducing the whiplash effect. A shorter neck reduces the lever effect and hence a smaller velocity of motion at the end of the arc the head goes through after a punch.
The way I see it is that there's a lot more mass to set into motion in the first place. Think hitting a tennis ball with a punch and a soccer ball. Which one will you be able to punch further? A bigger head also (presumably) comes with thicker bones able to resist blows better. No studies have ever been done on this to my knowledge so this is all thumb sucking. It seems logical though.

No, taking shots is as much mental as physical, probably moreso. Of course having a wide neck ect helps but look at froch for example, the dude have a thin pointed chin and could take shots better than most.

Valeuv ... more likely to break your hand on his head than knock him out.

Big head = tough chin? I don't know.

All I know is Deontay Wilders legs is skinny and yet he's probably the most power-fullest puncher in the heavyweight division.

It's mostly genetic evolution. Fighting men like gypsies have developed better chins through generations of bare Knuckle fighting

Joshua gets hurt and put down, but he gets back up.
Khan gets folded in half and stays down.

Neck powers give Joshua the edge :boxing1

Hamed had a decent chin but pencil neck and pea head. Tommy Morrison looked like a beast, traps and neck wise but had a weak chin. P Williams could take a hell of a shot before he was face planted, and he had that skinny build.

Tua - big head and short neck
Tyson - big head and short neck
Peter - big head and short neck
Mercer - big head and short neck

That isn't the only type of iron jaw, and there are no doubt exceptions, but that seems to be the most consistently hardy body type in boxing.

Dominic Guinn is just such an exception. Very willowy build with an average head and neck size, but never hurt or decked in his professional career.

Parker's also not hugely stocky, but can take a shot as well as anyone.

Ali had a long neck and his chin is arguably top 3.

Floyd is dumb as rocks. He just happened to be a generational talent and exceptional athlete. His advisors have done very well for him. However, if you were to put Floyd in an entry level desk job, he would be let go by the end of the day. For the record, Pacquiao is no genius either, but he's still much smarter than Floyd as he's holding a job in the senate that requires at minimum above average administrative, organizational, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
