Ilunga "Junior" Makabu - could the best h2h CW (with Usyk & Gassiev now at HW) maybe not be in WBSS?

He just toyed with & systematically obliterated Dmitry "The Vologonsk Hammer" Kudryashov to capture the WBC's vacant Silver cruiserweight title. He was already #4 in their rankings as of the last publication - with Gassiev (now inapplicable) the number one contender and Tabiti & Dorticós in the spots betwixt them. Given that Dorticós brutalized Tabiti yesterday to become the IBF champ, they are both going to be dropped from the rankings (Tabiti for the obvious reason of having been KTFO, and Dorticós because champs from another competing org are ineligible to be ranked) - which by default now means that Makabu sits in the mandatory slot, with the actual championship still vacant (Briedis vs. Głowacki was supposed to be for the interim belt in yesterday's main event, but the WBC retracted its sanctioning over some red tape issues). That means there's a very strong possibility he could be in the running to vie for the vacant title directly next time out - and if not, at the very least, he should have first dibs if the WBC opts to crown the WBSS champion later in the year.

I'm not sure the southpaw boxer-puncher would be all that long-shot an underdog against Dorticós or Briedis. I think any combination of fights involving them (or Głowacki, since he still has a potential claim to be in the mix given the controversial anticlimax of his semifinal elimination) would be terrific capstones on what has continued to be a surprisingly high-level and thriving division in recent years.

Makabu to me is sort of sitting in that "Lucian Bute" spot from the Super-6 years ago...where the ultimate tourney winner is still going to have to settle matters with him if they wanted to be the division's accepted ruler..

Yes, in hindsight I know that Bute fizzled, but when the S6 was happening literally everyone thought he should have been part of it and was a threat for all its participants.

Toyed with? He was nearly out as well, Kudryashov was one punch away from victory...

Makabu would be beaten badly by multiple cruiserweights. He has better skills than Kudryashov, but his balance was off and looked vulnerable. Egorov from the undercard would KTFO Makabu at this stage.

Makabu is himself actually tough as hell, soaked up some desperate bombs from Kudryashov and barely even blinked. I know the Bellew loss on his record looks damning but that was a case of him getting overconfident I think, and Bellew capitalizing after that first hook caught him off-guard. In a rematch I'd have picked Junior.

With victories over Kucher, Mchunu, Mabika, Johnson, Fields, Venter and now Kudryashov his résumé isn't super deep, but still pretty good and not many cruisers have better aside from the belt holders and Diablo.

Cieslak and Goulamirian are the only other guys with an argument. Id love to see Makabu throw down with either.

Pinpoint a time-stamped instance, round/minute/second where Makabu's reaction to a Kudryashov punch was so intense that you stand by characterizing it as "Makabu almost out" and Kudryashov "one punch away from victory.

    I'll wait.

...and wait, and wait, and wait...

Kudryashov has great power and when he lands a punch of course it‘s going to hurt but he wasn‘t one punch away from victory, he got beaten up from pillar to post.

Makabu was able to absorb many punches that would have never landed vs the slicker boxers...which means beating Kudra in his own game from the opening bell to the TKO (toying part is the disregard for Kudra KO power)

Will watch it later again but when he dropped Kudryashov in the second he was nearly out as well.

You’re overrating DK a bit. His chin is certified glass. Tony Bellew would have destroyed him.
