I guess one does not include Sullian as he did his important work the decade before.

So, you have Corbett, Jackson, Fitzsimmons, Jeffries on the top tier. Then , you have the secondary guys like Sharkey, Goddard, Maher, Ruhlin, Choynski... There's your top 9 unless my brain is fogged.

 

I'd mix in Peter Jackson too.

Good list, Kid McCoy might be above Choynski.

 

Then you wouldn't know much about that decade's heavyweights.

Remind me what was Kilrain's record in the 1890's? Goddard stopped Choynski twice, dropped a prime Jackson and fought him to a draw, and KO'd Maher twice and KO'd Denver Ed Smith.

Mitchell did little of note, also.

 

One imagines opportunities for important fights without the cuffs on were pretty limited. Jackson was able to make a big reputation before arriving in the US and was hard to be ignored. This trend continued for the next couple decades, one reason I don't take these fighters over-seriously in a head to head context. You can ask, what great black fighters did they avoid? Well, the great black talent available wasn't allowed to even surface but almost by accident.

 

What on earth are you talking about? The Corbett bout was lil' Mitchell's final bout for all intents and purposes. He was a non-entitiy in the 1890's.

Choynski's longest undefeated streak was from 1892-1896.

Regarding Choynski, which you can not apparently spell, I have no idea what you are trying to communicate.
