Skill wise, uzyk is on the same level as fury.
Power wise, Gassiev is very much up there.
Dorticus/Briedis are other very solid fighters.

Yes Whyte has done his thing at HW and definitely deserves a shot, but Whyte beating Parker, Chisora and Browne isn't exactly unifying a division, beating Breidis, Glowacki, Huck, Hunter, Bellew and Gassiev

 

How has Usyk not earned it

 

Because becoming undisputed and triggering ABC’s rule of getting a title shot at higher weight is corruption.

 

By not fighting in the division yet. He hasn’t faced a heavyweight, much less a heavyweight contender ... yet a champion is being forced to defend against him over all others who have proven themselves at that weight.

We’ve seen plenty of former cruiserweight champs who couldn’t cut it at heavy. A precious few who have. He should prove it and earn it.

I disagree.

But I think a more compelling case can be made for someone moving up to a division with a limit that’s only 5 pounds heavier than to one where the competition may be 50 or more pounds heavier.

Also, as a rule that gifts an unearned mandatory, why should someone moving up jump ahead in line over others who may have already positioned himself for one by actually beating contenders in that weight class? What if a top contender has already earned his spot - why should he take a back seat because someone from a lower weight up and decided one day to move up.

Here’s what it comes down to: you wanna play, get in the sandbox. Usyk needs to get in the heavyweight sandbox.

 

Evander Holyfield was undisputed cruiserweight champion.

When he moved up to heavyweight, he had to beat Quick Tillis, Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, Adilson Rodrigues and Alex Stewart to EARN a shot at the heavyweight title.
