I grew up in a Texas Children's home with a Guy named Roy Flynn.
Roy was not a real boxer but he did have a little training.
He would tell us stories about an old Boxer named Shifty who taught him a few things here, and there. His last name is Dando.

One day Roy Flynn was working out on the heavy bag, and Shifty came over to him, and said: "That's not how you do it; you gotta make those chain sing!"

Well, Roy showed me what Shift taught him, and I am starting to believe that I am the holder of a lost secret. I am now 60 years old, and I can still make those chains sing on a heavy bag. You should see how I can still make that heavy bag dance.

Years ago I watched a few boxing videos of Shifty on the Internet, and I also read a few articles from some old Newspapers. Now all that information has vanished! I have been looking, and it seems that Shifty has been erased from history. Shifty did not seem to have a prominent career but he was well known in his time. He seems to have lost as many fights as he has won.

Shifty also showed Roy some of the old bare knuckle moves in boxing, and its stiff arm lethal uppercut form. Now that takes some strong forearms.

So anyway; do any of you have any knowledge on how to find some information on Shifty? I wanted to write a story on him but it seems that I'm in living in the "Twilight Zone!"

    This is a great thread.
I can't say I'd heard of him before. I love reading about the more obscure boxers from that era. Great stuff.

Thanks Guys! I will need to budget in the Newspaper subscription for next month.
If I was a good writer I would already have an agent, and maybe I could get published.

Just curious, but are you subscribed to this service? I'm tempted to, but I guess I'm fishing for an endorsement or a detraction.

Nope. Just thought it would help the guy, as it seemed to have the most references to dando. Some of the clippings are also viewable if you click on them from a Google search.

Using the free trial now. I do like that you can pick specific dates immediately following big fights to get a feel for the expectations from the time. Definitely a useful tool, from the half a dozen or so fights I spot-checked.

Just Found This About Shifty Dando
I posted this copy of the above mentioned because I had trouble using my adblock.
    Thank You RoughDiamond!

Dec 12, 1928 - Dec 6, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Earl was born in 1928 and was one of 10 Chickasaw Indian children of Bessie and Dink Keel in Stratford, Oklahoma. He grew up on 160 acres of land received from his Chickasaw ancestors following the Trail of Tears and the tribe's forced exodus from Georgia. He would have turned 85 this week. He was very close to his brothers and sisters, and more than one sister said he was their protector. He spent much of his education at the Chilocco Indian School in the 1940s with his siblings. He played football for Chilocco, O.S.U. and Cameron, but his forte was in boxing. He was a boxer for 25 years as both an amateur, then a professional. He was the state champion 1947-1949 and a national finalist in 1948. Professionally, he had 67 wins vs. 14 losses. His coach was "Shifty Dando." The coach in the movie "Rocky" played by Burgess Meredith had to have been modeled after Shifty Dando. They were the same character. Earle was inducted into the Native American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a close friend of heavyweight champ Joe Louis for many years. Once he hung up the gloves, Earle refereed or judged fights by Muhammed Ali, Sonny Liston, and George Foreman. He owned a limousine business in Houston for many years with as many as 17 limos. He lived with his sister, Ruth Moss, for five years before moving to the Norman Veterans Center for the last three years, where they took great care of him. He is loved by many, and his happy demeanor always cheered others. He is survived by his son, Lou Keel; and his daughter, Libby Keel. Surviving sisters include Ruth Moss, Betty Lucas, and Anne Butler. Surviving brothers are Leland Keel and Robert Keel. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 11, 2013, 2 p.m., at the Pickard Funeral Home, Stratford, Oklahoma.
