I thought the WBA were the worst with the 'regular' 'super' rubbish but this week I've seen the WBC make Canelo 'franchise' champion and sanction Amir Khan to fight for the 'pearl' belt. This is taking the madness to new heights.

Boxing is my favourite sport and I'll always stick with it but it's easy to see why many dislike it. The alphabet bodies are ruining the sport and only seem to be getting worse. How many belts will there be in ten or twenty years? It's sad to see.

It's downright ridiculous, and another "hold my beer" moment from the WBC towards the WBA.

Makes me wonder what the WBA's next move will be.

The more belts there are, the more opportunities there are for fighters to get their hands on a belt. Everyone makes money then from the organisations, to the TV companies, to the promoters and then the fighters. That's why no one will protest against the organisations to reduce their belts.

The franchise one is frankly absurd.

Can you imagine Strawweight with all these belts? Say there are 12 (there are much more, certainly when counting the minor belts), which means that about 1 in every 15 105lbs boxers must have one of the higher rated belts in posession at any time... absolutely bonkers!

I cannot wait for the interim-super champion-peal-Franchise belt. Between their #7 and #9 ranked flyweights

Are any of them respectable? WBO seem to give anyone a shot. Especially Frank Warren fighters.

I like the IBF rehydration cap for title fights but they stripped Tyson Fury for no good reason.

IBF often come up with some bizarre mandatories (e.g when Kell Brook was champ) but generally they seem to have rules that they make some attempt to stick to. The others are a combination of completely incompetent and completely corrupt.

WBC are doing their best to catch up with this Franchise nonsense. On top of a long history of flagrant corruption.

WBO made Anthony Yarde mandatory after beating a queue of part time plumbers !

I still have WBA #1 in my ridiculous boxing org rankings. The main reason is they still keep a straight face when talking about the super/regular nonsense and also they rank Fres Oquendo as #3 HW !

The WBC, WBO and WBA come up with ridiculous mandatories as well, with the WBC making it some sort of shield to be able to feed their favorite beltholders pushovers and protect them from facing dangerous opposition.

I remember thinking when both Holmes and Bowe basically threw away that belt "everybody knows who's champ anyway".

The more belts that flood the market, the less significant each individual belt becomes. In lieu of the impossible scenario of scrapping all alphabet groups and replacing with a single worldwide boxing governing body, the dilution of belts is actually the best outcome.

As fans the best thing we can do is not pander to the whims, indulgencies and absurdities of the alphabet cretins. Stop making a big deal about winning and unifying trinkets that can be created out of thin air and taken away without warning or reason.

I actually think the current situation is marginally better than what we had in the mid 90s, when unification matches were a rarity as there was still enough intrinsic value in each belt to offset the risk of fighting the other champions. The end result was divisions within divisions, where each fighter could lord it over their own alphabet domain and make a good living out of it. With so many more champions now, the rewards simply for holding a belt are lower and their is a greater incentive to risk it and chase bigger fights. Even if you lose a belt the chances are you'll get a chance to win one back at some point just by sticking around. In the last decade we've had the Super Six and 5 WBSS tournaments, all of which will establish a clear "man" in the division in a way that was more problematic in the 90s.

What we need is one of the bodies to be seen as the true belt to hold and make the other ones look like a bit of a joke.
I suppose the ibf are the front runners atm but they need to push a harder agenda

I was completely disdainful of the WBO back in the 80s...until Bowe won it. To me he legitimized that whole belt.

The IBF are the most consistent I think and don’t stand out as being in anyone’s pockets. Haymon and the PBC have the WBC, Warren and co have the WBO, Eddie seems well in the WBA.
