He certainly is one of them, Jim Jeffries was another, he had the reach and height to wait for fighters to come in and then counter them to death, [Sharkey],and the size and strength to bull his way inside and dominate lighter men up close with rib crunchers[Fitz,Corbett.].ie Both options.
How do you account for Valuev's success then? Was it his exceptional boxing skills that gained him a title? If you're 5'10"and 185lbs fighting a guy 6'5" 240lbs who can hit a bit ,you better be damn fast on your feet, with elusive defensive skills, have outstanding head movement, and excellent handspeed.Other wise you're getting murdered!
The relevance of this is? Funny I don't remember Rocky defending against a prime boxer /puncher 240lbs 6'5"who could whack? If anything's going in the garbage can in this one it will be Rocky ,upside down!
Johnson v Burns?Johnson v Flynn? Who dominated inside? He's only a fool if his isn't adept at inside work, which Bowe certainly was! Short guys are always vulnerable to uppercuts inside, Bowe was very good at throwing this shot.
I'm not sure about that . Rock s durable ,no doubt but a much bigger , determined heavyweight throwing solid punches at him as he's coming in .. Rock s style of fighting won't do him any favors here ,may work against him .
Bowe by TKO in seven. Just one of RB's uppercuts would have knocked Rocky silly imo. Rocky liked fighting inside, Bowe was too big and too good for a big man on the inside to not catch him with that, which might have been Bowe's greatest power punch. Even if Rocky had gotten past the jab the uppercut was too easy to land on a guy with his style imo. Can anyone here imagine him taking that uppercut flush and NOT dropping? Bowe hit significantly harder than Jersey Joe.
Take a look at this photo and then realise Bowe was 2 inches taller than Ali and 25/28lbs heavier. This content is protected
This is why I'm sure Marciano suffers so much in this matchup ,we know for a fact that Rock s going to fight in close , and there's not much going to be stopping Bowe from getting him with the uppercut time and time again . Jersey found him rather easily in parts , Riddick would to and he carries far greater power .
To me the uppercut would spell the end. I think many of us have seen Big Daddy lift mofos off their feet with it. It's one of the greatest ever in boxing imo.
I don't think Marciano would make much of a dent in the 1990's heavyweight division. I don't think he would last very long regularly, almost exclusively, fighting larger athletes, especially when he reached the top 20. All the problems he had in his own era, frail skin, bad back, mangled face, would be exacerbated by the heavier damage, the much bigger, stronger athletes, not only taking their shots but having to struggle with their weight and strength in the infighting he so needed to achieve victory. He might make a Tuesday Night Fights headliner or two but quickly fades and never really qualifies to meet a hot prospect like Bowe.
