My last thread was a bit negative, being about worse British fighters who won titles. The fighters I listed where some of my personal favourites, but I wouldn't say they were ever the best. So this time I'm forgetting about titles. If there was a British hall of fame opening, and you're only allowed to vote for 5 fighters to get in (must be retired) who would you choose? For me it would be 1. Joe Calzaghe 2. Prince Naseem 3. Chris Eubank sr 4. Lennox Lewis 5. Nigel benn Notable mention to George groves Frank Bruno Carl Froch Ricky Hatton
Lewis Calzaghe Froch Buchanan Conteh Are first 5 that spring to mind, though not in above order. Obviously there would no doubt be changes to this list if I had seen some other British greats I have never seen.
Of the modern fighters of the last 30 years (retired), Lennox Lewis would be the leading candidate probably. Then .... Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton, maybe Joe Calzaghe.
The first five would have to include Mace, Fitzsimmons and Wilde. But I guess the OP wants modern fighters (retired after 1969) thus in that category my five would be: Lennox Lewis Ken Buchanan Joe Calzaghe Carl Froch Naseem Hamed
You put in whoever you like brother. I've only recently started looking into classic boxing but I love the modern era actually watching fights. I've read about Bob fitzsimons and Willie pep etc they sound like real warriors and legends, but I can't say I know enough about them to properly rate them
Fitzsimmons, Wilde, Kid Lewis and Lennox Lewis are easy picks for me. Fifth spot is trickier, but I’ll go for Benny Lynch to spread the love a bit and as he hasn’t had a mention yet.
Chris Eubank Sr... (Sigh) Frank Bruno????? I have to hand it Calzaghe, though. It's some achievement for an arm puncher to win all his fights. If he had charisma and a punch he could have been a global star.
For me Froch belongs in the next tier alongside the likes of Hatton, Benn and Eubank. He would need to have beaten or at least took a draw from his fight with Ward.
If you need me to tell you the influence these 2 made for British boxing I don't know what to tell you. They both lost a few fights sure and definitely not the best international superstars if their generation. Great showman though who bought boxing to the masses, made it a mainstream sport. But seeming you seem so disappointed in my selections, tell me 10 better British fighters in their weight classes that are now retired.
Are you talking about influential boxers, which you do at the start, or the best boxers, which you do at the end? Because it's not the same thing.
Neither and both sir. I was telling you I put them in my ATG list more for there influence than their skill set but ultimately the combination of the 2. Due to your disappointment in my selections, and knowing their influence could not be argued with I bought their skills into question as I don't think there are many better British boxers than them two in their respected weight class anyway. I don't normally answer people who answer questions with questions, lucky boy
