pure boxers are getting too much appreciation nowadays

I think people remember fights and performances completely differently to what actually happened and credit fighters with "pure boxing" performances that were just poor.

If you are in any doubt find the Klitschko Vs Fury rbr and read through it, its hilarious, it will make you laugh.

Fury and Klitschko were absolutely slaughtered by nearly everybody during and after the fight, Klitschko and Fury fans were also giving them abuse.

Yet that fight is remembered by many as some sort of masterclass, it wasnt a masterclass.. it was pigdog boring.

Wilder Vs Fury, it had a great moment, MOMENT, it was not a great fight, about 8 punches a round thrown, it just wasn't great fight, Fury getting up in the 12th made that fight entertaining, apart from that moment another pigdog boring fight.

It's a sort of boxing snobbery, its like some people praising this kind of boxing are pretending they are seeing things and appreciating things that others can't see.

Look, there is nothing wrong with enjoying different styles, different fights but to pretend fighters are some how "genius" and performances are "masterclass" and trying to justify a lack of action is a joke in my opinion.

    It's all very selective also.

Bernard Hopkins was the same, his fans said the same stuff but he was ridiculously boring, good at what he did but very very boring, he didn't flatten anybody, he just fiddled and picked his way throhgh fights.

Yet years before I remember Lennox Lewis getting slaughtered by the American boxing press for boxing his way through fights, he was regarded as negative and boring even though he did far more than Hopkins did in terms of entertainment.

Klitschko was slaughtered for being boring, why? He scored more stoppages than Fury does, he boxed his way through fights, didn't get hit that much in his prime, why doesn't he get the same appreciation for his boxing skills, boxing IQ and mentality

AJ Vs Parker, AJ boxed, well tried too, it wasn't appreciated or applauded, it was seen as negative and lacklustre.

Fury does it and it's "genius".. I really don't understand the difference in appreciation and attitude between certain fighters and performances.

It's true. I agree in part that if you can't do anything about it, you deserve to lose.

But it's not that simple. When someone learns boxing, they usually won't choose to fight like that. Be it due to shame, boredom or something else. Most fighters try to fight more.

If all decided from the beginning to fight like that, things would go differently. There'd be no aggressive fighters for slick "runners" to take advantage of, they'd just face the same style back and it'd be about who can do it better. I suspect many wouldn't be as good as they were.

If all fighters did that, the sport would be horrible and no one would watch. However the opposite would be true if all fighters were more like Tyson, Pacquiao, Hearns, etc. I respect offensive guys more. They are the ones that make fights. Without them the slick counterpunchers/runners are even worse to watch. All they do is react to what the guys with balls do. They all secretly envy them and at some point cry about not getting any respect when they know damn well why they don't get it

As the person that made that RBR thread and led the vanguard hurling mountains of abuse in both Fury's and Klitschko's direction in real time ...I can vouch for this. :sisi1

Have you ever been in a boxing gym? What you're saying is ridiculous because all boxers can stand and trade if they want to some are more durable and have more power but they can all do it. Look at rigo he can do it he could have always done it he had the ability he just got older and is forced to adapt and use less movement because his legs are gone. But why do that if you know how to box as well and can hit and not get hit? Taking unnecessary punishment for what? To please fans like you who will forget about them when they retire or call them glass jawed bums if they get koed? You wont put a dime in the fighters pocket if he can't even tie his shoes when he calls it a day. Learn to appreciate all styles. This is boxing not tough man remember that.

Interesting, I always considered it to be a sport. Entertainment is a byproduct of sport - a welcome one, agreed - but a byproduct nonetheless. And anyway, boxing has always been a puzzle with many solutions. That's part of its appeal....

No one said tough man. There’s a big difference between tough man competitions and the guys I mentioned. I don’t want to watch bums throw wild punches like cavemen. Neither does anyone else.

This applies to every sport, not just boxing. Offense first is more fun. But with technique and still minding your defense. It doesn’t mean you have to have zero defense. No one likes zero defense because those teams or athletes get nowhere and are boring to watch too.

And they don’t have to do it for me. They can do what they want. I will watch who I want. I acknowledge when a fighter is good regardless of style. But If he’s not exciting, I will say it too.

What I said is true. Two safety first guys are very boring to watch. One safety first guy vs a risk taker, it’s more fun to watch but it will be the risk taker making it so. Two risk takers is the most fun to watch. This is always the case.

So what you gonna do about counterpunchers? Somebody like Winky Wright for instance? Quality fighter, but his skillset was mainly setting up traps and angles for his opponents so he could counter. When he fights somebody with average footwork, he would look amazing and cut his opponent to shreds. When his opponent could move well, he could barely throw anything, let alone land and would stink the place out.

Two brawlers throwing loads of uneducated punches in the middle of the ring is nothing but a bar room brawl. Styles make fights man.

Just to put it out there, most boxers I would rank in top 20 p4p, and probably most others, are mostly aggressive fighters.
