How do you rate it? As a Parker supporter, I'm disappointed he definitely lacks power. Carlos Takam - was never dropped or hurt in 12. Was ko'd brutally by Povetkin and Chisora. Razvan Cojanu - went 12 without even getting dropped. Was Ko'd in 2 three times. Glass jaw. Totally shot Alex Leapai - years ago was Ko'd by featherfisted Kevin Johnson, now takes all Parker's punches for 10 rounds. I'd say Parker's power is 6 at best on 10 scale. Ruiz, Wilder, AJ, Ortiz, Whyte, as well as many prospects hit way harder, unfortunately for Parker.
Mid scale - he's a bit back foot and tentative by nature, which figures in his punch power but he can dig hard enough when he wants / needs to.
It's looking like he is not a top level puncher, but I think his power is probably a bit more than he is getting credit for as well - it was pretty clear that most of the punches he threw in the Leapai fight he didn't really throw everything into. I think he is quite weary of gassing or getting clipped too much, so is mostly not committing too much to his shots - which for the most part is working out OK for him. I was thinking EXACTLY what many people are when watching the Leapai fight, but there was one or two shots which unfortunately hit mostly or entirely glove where he threw with significantly more spite and made Leapai take steps back DESPITE them blocked - I think they were points where Joe figured there was less likelyhood of Leapai blocking or absorbing them and I think if they got through cleanly this conversation wouldn't be happening. Leapai went quite cagey in this fight, as with Joshua in that fight... despite both making out like they were going to go in there to knock Joe out. Aside from AJ, Dillian Whyte has only been down against Parker and that was probably because he decided he didn't rate Joes power and decided to go for the knockout later in their fight and as a result he was lucky to see the final bell.... Parker's power is definitely enough that it should be respected, it just so happens that he doesn't have to rely on it. I do think he should probably be a little less shy with it at times - though. I am pretty sure he could have finished the job earlier yesterday, but understand why he was a bit more conservative - after the Whyte and AJ losses a systematic stoppage is probably "enough" when taking any unneeded risks and getting hurt or even worse, stopped by even a top 20 guy would completely screw his career at this point.
only reason alex lost to johnson was from fatigue. johnson made him miss with most of his shots and alex was exhausted. johnson could have pushed him over he was so tired, but the ref stopped it after some unanswered punches by kevin.
He needs to stop backing up all the time, if he comes forward like he used to early in his career I Think it would make a difference. I think his power is about equal to Tyson fury’s only difference is Parker doesn’t pull faces and clown around, so people don’t say he schooled his opponents they say he has no power. Fury did not ko wilder so does that mean he has no power either?
He needs to pick his shots. He did it a few times throwing softer jabs followed by heavier punches, but there is no point smashing at gloves unless you have the stamina for it, ala Marciano. Parker tires too quickly.
He's very quick and explosive and has good punch technique, so that's always going to translate into some level of KO power. I think the reason this doesn't always show in the ring is due to a number of things already picked up on in this thread: - he doesn't have the best punch selection, constantly throwing the same shots over and over again, often on an opponent's gloves - he often fights off the backfoot, which isn't his natural territory and tends to make him slap and cuff more, as well as drastically reduce his speed - his timing is kind of predictable, and he often telegraphs his intentions with little tells like half-jabs. Therefore fighters can more often than not brace for his shots - his basic footwork and lack of nuances in this category limit his angles of attack. Top level fighters like Povetkin constantly take subtle sidesteps and half steps back to open up fighters to their shots. Parker looks extremely primitive in this regard. In addition his short arms relative to his height mean he's only really effective as a puncher at close to medium range, but the trouble is he often wants to fight on the outside against shorter guys, and is too easily kept at that distance by taller boxers, so he's not often operating at his ideal range. When the stars align and he actually manages to clock a fighter clean he generally does a lot of damage.
I think Joseph Parker is one of the most boring heavyweights imaginable. In fact, I turned the Leapai fight off Saturday night because I couldn't stand watching it anymore, and I rarely do that with heavyweight fights because I'm a diehard heavyweight fan. I once had high hopes for Parker. Now, I'm not sure if Parker would have even beaten Jimmy Thunder when Thunder went on his Tuesday Night Fight run from 1994-1998 and defeated guys like Tubbs, Berbick and Witherspoon. He doesn't have the power to stop the top guys. And he doesn't have the boxing skills to dominate any of the top guys. He's just sort of "a guy" at this point.
Well, I have been punched in the face by both Parker and Ruiz, they have similar power and speed, luckily nighter tried to hurt me but I seen both hit their sparring partners with bad attention and it have had similar effect on the same partner. The main difference is that Ruiz is more aggressive and that’s why it can look like he’s more powerful. Btw same sparring that got stopped by Parker&Ruiz did not get stopped by Wladimir.
oh lets be honest seeing as you like to "call a spade a spade",his non existent punching power would put you in hospital.
