He left obvious names off of some lists and threw the kitchen sink in on others without checking - like Tubbs and Coetzer and Danny Williams - and somehow seemed to remember Kevin Johnson was once rated for a month back in 2009, and yet included NO names for the current guys.

I don't know how you pull an old Tony Tubbs and Pierre Coetzer out of thin air to start a list ... but don't seem to be aware that Andy Ruiz just knocked off Ring #1 rated Anthony Joshua 30 days ago.

    So, yeah, there's an agenda.

Whatever. Gotta go. I'm tired of all the agendas.

Thanks, Rummy. I wish posters like Doublechin would stop prejudging posts. We get it he likes Wilder and distains Klitschko, but this thread is about several guys. I didn't thoroughly research it, to start the thread I put in a bunch of possible names of people who might have been ranked and asked the board for help. Lewis, I think fought the most in the top ten when they were ranked by ring magaizne, so he's the hardest one to get 100% correct. Who did I miss from Lewis?

Hopefully, it's clear now the difference between Annually ranked and Currently ranked in a monthly sense, and yes Gomez was ranked when V. Klitschko beat him. With him opting out, this thread can now shine free of distractions and incorrect information.

I'm not here to say, Johnson, who was then undefeated deserved to be ranked, I'm saying he was.

See you in the next thread, no you do NOT understand the rules.

    Top Ten Ring Magazine
    This content is protected
, Heavyweight title holders. Re-read the part that says beaten.

    Now did Wilder
    This content is protected
Fury? Of course not! We have a reading issue here. We already explained that Stiverene, who had not fought in two years and was fat was
    This content is protected
currently ranked by Ring Magazine for the pathetic re-match vs Wilder. So
    This content is protected
    on your claims.

If you want to be factually correct Ortiz was ranked when Wilder beat him. But as we know Wilder waited for Ortiz to age, and almost lost that one to a 38-41 year old man. Wilder also has a win over Bermane Stiverne who was ranked in the first fight. So that's it for Wilder, he has two wins over Ring Magazine Ranked opponents when he fought them.

I agree with you that you should exit from this thread, your'e not giving us correct information, and you are getting frustrated with an agenda like tone. I'm looking for facts.

    Couple of mistakes here.
    Barrett wasn't a top 10'er in 2000.
Rahman wasn't top 10. He was a short notice replacement for Povetkin.
Thompson wasn't top 10 in the rematch.
Sam Peter wasn't top 10 both times he fought Wlad. . Wladimir Klitschko himself wasn't top 10 at the time of the first Peter fight.

Chisora no. He was coming off losses to Fury and Helenius. Fury at the time was unranked and Helenius was bottom half of the top 10.
Its doubtful Williams and Solis were also ranked top 10. Need verification for that?
Johnson featured at #10 for all of a month.

    Agenda exposed.

If I want to be factually correct? A simple scan of any ratings shows Ortiz was ranked then and he's ranked now that they are going to fight again. He's been ranked by Ring for YEARS ... not days.

You've got people scrounging around in old magazines trying to find out if some useless challenge may have possibly been ranked for a month so you can add them to some list to pump up some meaningless defenses.

That's all this is. I burned your reply in another thread about quality of opposition and you started this.

Again, someone could beat Kevin Johnson every week and that doesn't count as much as beating an "actual contender" or champion who sticks around for YEARS and not days.

Hey, I think Albert Sosnowski might have been rated for a couple days when the Ring magazine ratings panel went out and got drunk for someone's birthday ... and then they changed it when everyone sobered up.

Better add him quick. It would count as much as a win over Lennox Lewis or Anthony Joshua in this thread.

And how on earth do you leave Joshua off Andy Ruiz's list, but you're trying to add guys like Juan Carlos Gomez and Pierre Coetzer to others?

    What a joke.

Then why do you keep adding names that weren't ranked fighters and refusing to remove them ... and why do you refuse to add names of ranked fighters to other's lists ... and why are you doing no research of your own?

Even after days of people telling you Tubbs wasn't on a list and Coetzer wasn't on a list and Chisora and Danny Williams weren't on a list, etc., they're still up there.

Why did you add them to begin with when you clearly did no research, other than just to pump up the totals of other boxers?

Do you seriously need to do "research" to know Joseph Parker was ranked when he fought Anthony Joshua in a heavyweight unification?

Why isn't Parker on Joshua's list but you're still trying to add any token challenger to others' lists and refusing to move non-rated guys off other's resumes?

    Looking for facts? (LOL)

Exactly. So Joshua beating Wlad in a classic doesn't count, and Wilder and Fury (arguably the two best today) fighting an epic draw doesn't count ...

But he needs to try to slip in Vitali's 12-rounder with Kevin Johnson and his win over Danny Williams in there.

In this exercise, those count more than getting off the floor to stop Wlad and Fury getting off the floor twice against the biggest puncher arguably in history when currently the two best heavyweights in boxing fought last December.

    No agenda, though.

It's just that outpointing Kevin Johnson means more than those other fights ... clearly.

I don't have anything for 2011 except for the annual Ring rankings, so I don't know if Solis was rated or not.
This 'collecting heavyweight rankings' project I've been doing... it's been off and on. Apparently in 2011 it was off.

Regarding rankings, it's instructive to look at more than one source. Also, you must consider the source.

Ring has had its biases over the years, including when Nat Fleischer ran the magazine. He / Ring didn't rate Jimmy Ellis highly after Ellis lost to Frazier, whereas other magazines and organizations still did. Later on, and corresponding with the timeframe in this thread, Pierre Coetzer's name was mentioned as possibly being ranked when Bowe fought him. Ring didn't rank him. Sister publication KO did.

Even now, looking at multiple sources, Boxing News (UK) hasn't included Povetkin or Ortiz in their top 10 world rankings for ages. Ring and several others do.

I stopped collecting WBA & WBC (not to mention IBF, WBO) at around 1978 when it became clear that, for the most part, their rankings were no longer based on merit, but rather on who was greasing whom's palms. It's like they don't even pretend to base rankings on merit anymore; instead it seems to be who they want to fight their champion.

The WBA had a long-standing relationship with South African fighters and champs, because the WBC didn't rate any South Africans forever (due to Apartheid).

Coetzer and Bowe was a WBA eliminator. Coetzer wasn't rated by Ring.

I collected all those magazines, too - RING, Big Book of Boxing, KO, World Boxing, Boxing Illustrated (later International Boxing Digest), Boxing Today, Boxing 87, Boxing 88, Boxing 89, Boxing 90, Boxing 91, Boxing 92, I even had an international subscription for a couple years to Boxing News (because I traded VHS tapes with a couple guys from the UK and New Zealand).

I have the Ring magazine from November 1992 with the headline "Is Riddick Bowe the Next Heavyweight Champion?" In it are the Ring ratings for the period ending July 7, 1992, a week before the Bowe-Coetzer fight.

    Coetzer isn't rated.

    The top 10 was:
    1. Holyfield
    2. Bowe
    3. Ruddock
    4. Moorer
    5. Witherspoon
    6. Tucker
    7. Foreman
    8. Lewis
    9. Mercer
    10. Morrison

Povetkin and Ortiz were likely pulled from Boxing News ratings when they tested positive. Pubs/Sites/Groups that "take a stand" in their ratings tend to skew the ratings as well.

Can anyone figure out Wlad’s list as he was the last Great in the division. Off the top of my head I would think those fighters were in the ring top 10 - monthly at the time Wlad fought them would be :
Jennings, Pulev, Povetkin, Haye, chambers, chagaev, thompson (1), ibrigamov, Brock, Byrd, Peter (1), Mccline, Byrd

Maybe Brewster in rematch? He was out of ring for long time and coming off a loss but his run before that was good so maybe he wasn’t out of top 10 completely?
I could be off on few just going over Wlad’s record and logically I think those would be listed

Wlad had a large number. He had a very good run.

What skews it is the RING ratings were "not remotely great" at the time.

Guys like Eddie Chambers, Calvin Brock and Tony Thompson aren't Hall of Famers like Bowe, Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis, Foreman, Holmes, etc.

Wlad might have defeated a dozen or so RING rated guys but none of them were greats. That's not really true for most of the other champs mentioned.

The only opponents Wlad faced who may likely go to the Hall one day are Joshua and Fury, who beat him.

I never said all the names on the 1st post are right, hence the asking for hep and point of the thread.

I'm sure about Solis. Not sure about Chisora, who was robbed vs Helenius.

Dude, please leave this thread like you said you would. It's painfully apparent your reading comprehension is not the best. I pointed out two of your mistakes. You also need to learn the difference between Annually ranked and Monthly ranked.

Just so you understand, my first post was a work in concept? Read it again:

"Help me compile this list. Rules the opponent had to be ranked at the time of the match was made where the opponent occupied a spot of #1-#10 in Ring Magazine's rankings OR, was annually ranked the year before without losing until meeting one of the below world alphabet champions.

*** ROUGH DRAFT *** Possibly ranked opponents"

The word help means add to the the list. Do you understand was a rough draft is? I will revise things when time permits. I hope for your sake you aren't lighting off fireworks tonight.

Wlad never made his names on washed up OLDER Champions. Could you imagine what he would have done to Holyfield, Foreman, or Bowe while he was champion.? The fighters he beat were more formidable than the older X Champions, so how can you possibly hold it against him?

For example, what if Vitali switched placed with Briggs vs Foreman?

Or Wlad switched places with Ibragomiv vs. Holyfiled?

Wlad will be a first ballot hall of fame fighter, who leads his class in votes, same as his brother. That's as good as it gets.

Vitali was set to face Mike Tyson, but Danny Williams defeated Tyson, so he beat him instead.

Now, if you are finished being a troll, you can add who was in the top ten, but provide proof. We've already proven Stiverne wasn't ranked at all in the top ten for the second fight, and once again I'll update the first post at a later date.
