Ppl underrating Rivas boxing skills and skillset in general. They judging him by the last round vs. Jennings and seeing a slugger. Rivas actually is a pretty decent boxer with great jab and footwork. He beat Pulev in the amateurs, boxing his ears off. He showed in the Jennings fight that he can win a fight by several paths. He boxed, he won rounds, he pressured, he won rounds, he went all in, he ko'd Jennings. Great fighter, well rounded, if he can improve his gas tank he's definitely able to beat Whyte who looks like he's still lifting more weights in the gym than working on his terrible stamina. I am not even hating Whyte or bashing him. I think this is a great fight but Rivas IMO is better fighter overall which should make it a 50/50 fight with the home advantage for Whyte. I hope we see fair cards if it goes 12 rounds. I doubt it but i hope so.
I think Rivas’ stamina is really his only disadvantage against Whyte, though it is a pretty big one. I think like you said they see the Jennings fight and see him as a slugger or a pressure fighter, which he had to take on the role of against Jennings who was being extremely defensive. Watch his other fights and you realize he’s a highly skilled fighter who actually seems to prefer to counterpunch. If Whyte comes out aggressive he’s going to sleep. If he fights in a shell he’ll have to dig deep and get really busy when Rivas is resting, but even then I’m not sure he can pull it off for 12 rounds. He’s not quite as slippery or quick as Jennings.
I think the disadvantage isn't that big because Whyte himself has pretty bad conditioning. He gassed badly in most of his fights and he was just outworked by old man Chisora who probably lost all rounds vs. Takam before he scored the vicious KO. I also think Rivas stamina looked much better vs. Jennings compared to the Hubeaux fight. He probably peaking shape-wise vs. Whyte. Expect him being in the best shape of his career tbh.
Hard call this one, I think Whyte has been pretty fortunate to graze by Chisora x2 and Parker for various controversial reasons but Rivas isn't necessarily an artist in the ring either. It's likely to be a pretty violent fight, and I feel like it's one which could hang on what the ref sees and how he reacts to it. Ultimately likely to be very competitive and one which wouldn't surprise me if it went either way.
I didn't know much about Rivas but I did some study and he is far better than I assumed and is a live dog in this fight.. Whyte isn't a great boxer and can be hit and Rivas can hit. If Whyte is the "real deal" he should win this one though....
I've watched probably more Rivas fights than most people here as I've watched the fights that were in french as well. he was always kind of just there. he was good but he was just below impressing. that being said I actually had him up going into round 12 vs Jennings. Marc Ramsay always has big game plans and wants his fighters to listen to him word for word. but sometimes he had it all wrong. Kovalev 2 rematch they wanted to wait until round 6 to start. But. Kovalev was doing to Buddy McGirt routine. don't try to hurt him just win on the cards. tap some of your combos. Rivas starting strong early is probably a good idea but who knows the actual game plan.
Sad that a lot of people are remarking on how this is actually a competitive fight, it should be! I believe Rivas tastes elite power and the world changes for him. I hope to see some fireworks although this is a gateway fight for both so I expect it to be cagey. Have to favour Whyte at home but anyone's beatable at HW, let the bombs fly!
Well Rivas was certainly kept honest after tasting the power of Whyte. But kept going in on pure heart and grit.
