As did BHop. Already a legend at the time, but everyone thought he was past it. Next fight he Lacy'd Pavlik and fought on another half dozen years at the highest level. Cracking result with age.

Half decent is probably right. Bika is a guy who, in general, lost every time he stepped up.

The issue was always that for a guy who seemed to have waited an eternity to get some recognition, Bika was a horrible opponent. Does this place go back far enough to see what the reaction was when it was announced? I bet it was an absolutely massive let down.

The local lad would have beaten anyone put in front of him, one of the most adaptable fighters to grace our sport.

Robin Reid beat his ass and got jerked. People seem to forget that one.

Whilst it was close and Calzaghe was not at his best (ill prior to the fight) I couldn't give that one to Reid, it was closer than it should have been though. It wasn't Fury v McDermott 1 though.

Yep enzo commended ried told him he should get a rematch
Frank said the rematch would happen so did Joe

    Hmmmm
This could be seen as swerving a difficult fight
This fight should have been a draw with the rematch to happen right after

bika was not horrible, my friend he was a worthy opponent at SMW, but he was just a smw novice at the time with no smw fights.

he is joes 2nd best defense, arguably, certainly the 3rd best.

true, but at 36 years of age, joe needed an excsue to get out of making more than one standard level SMW defence as opposed to soft wbo ones.

he was 36, he didnt deserve to be facing guys like froch.

c'mon bika wasn't that bad, he is joes 3rd best defence. If hes half bad then thats not a good indictment of joes career.

noone expected joe to go out and fight someone really good, not with his track record, so I am not sure where the disappointment would come from

Slightly aside but I accidentally met Enzo Calzaghe the day after the Lacy fight. He was walking by the Millenium stadium in Cardiff with a few mates. I didn't even really want to, but I just sort of couldn't stop myself extending a hand and congratulating him which he took very well.
