If Canelo Alvarez beats Kovalev, would he be the best Mexican boxer of all-time?

That's a marketing ploy by Oscar to make people keep talking about Canelo, nothing else.

Chava is greater than both combined IMO.

He didn’t look fantastic. He hasn’t looked fantastic for years. He just looked better than he did in his previous fight which he lost. A new trainer did seem to help him look and do better this time.

He used an active guard in his last fight which was missing when he lost to the same guy.

Which is why I said he looked better than he did in his previous fight which he lost.

    Pay attention, Stevo!

    LOL

Yeah, Oscar decided Canelo wasn't getting enough attention due to the lack of options he had for his next fight.

    Pac had Bradley and Horn.

Canelo gets the cards every fight.

Beating Kovalev even at the full 175 lbs weight limit doesn't automatically make a case for Canelo even being in the top 5 Mexicans of all-time.
I just don't think you can throw a fighter in there that has plenty of prime left in his years.
Beating Kovalev imo would be a major feat for Canelo, but Kovalev at this point in his career doesn't have the value as a fighter he did pre-Ward days.
A determination of where Canelo fits in the all-time picture will best be made 5+ years down the line.

Canelo is advancing along though and seemingly getting better. I think right now he's getting close to being in the mention with fighters like Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, a win vs Kovalev certainly gets him there, but not yet near the ranks of Chavez, Sanchez, and Marquez.

Its okay to lose to ATGs, especially when that ATG was the best fighter of his era.

You rank JMM over Morales? I feel Morales is the best of the three.

    Morales
    JMM
    Barrera

It could be a legitimate target as if Canelo would win that fight. He'd be the WBO champ and Gilberto Ramirez is in at 2 in the rankings. Surely could be a massive fight in Mexico

While the talk of the match up is exciting, I sense funny business here. I'll believe it when they are win the ring at the same time.
