Dedicating this post to the people who were harmed emotionally by my other post and to those who were disappointed when our self-proclaimed boxing historian couldn't back up any of his pet quotes.

Sharkey quoted in Will Grimsley, Sharkey Picks Dempsey Over Louis, Iowa City Press-Citizen Feb 26, 1953

"Dempsey was a killer--cruel, vicious, savage. When he hit you it felt like every bone in your body was broke. He'd hit you on the arm and you couldn't lift it. If he hit you on the leg you might be a cripple for life. "You come out of a fight with Dempsey full of welts and bruises and every bone aching. Louis? A great fighter and a great hitter. But he was a methodical punishing type of boxer who built up a terrific explosion. Dempsey would have gotten him, I'm afraid, before the explosion."

I don't believe any of these newspaper quotes unless backed up with audio.

" Louis was a great fighter, great fighter, but he was not the all round great fighter.I mean,Dempsey was a great fighter,he could take it and he could punch.Louis was a great fighter period.A great boxer, terrific puncher, great finisher, but you could get to him" Jack Sharkey 1971

Damn, I try to do a good deed for the fanboys who were hurt or angered by the other Sharkey quote and...nothing.

He is said to have picked Louis later in life, so I don't think that he was 100% consistent on the question.

It is to his credit that he will post new evidence that contradicts his earlier argument.

This story doesn't contradict any argument I've made but thanks.

Don't mind HOUDINI though. I'm becoming more and more convinced that he's not only extremely dense but also very dishonest. Although I guess his ridiculous workout saga was a dead giveaway.

Kevin... Face it. You have been 100% wrong concerning every single topic. To be honest with you.....you have learned nothing about boxing history even though you frequent a boxing history web page. Sad........

    And another quote:

“Sharkey was a renowned complainer and this earned him the uncomplimentary nickname of “The Boston Gob” a term at the time used for gossipers and whiners.

Tex Rickard Boxing’s Greatest Promoter Page 187.

Again his nickname was due in part to his constant complaining.

I am always baffled how anyone can expect consistency and truth from a former professional fighter who got hit in the head for a living.....all the old fighters I know had opinions that were rarely consistent and liked living in the past....they could have been the champ....I enjoy fighters stories and opinions but I always take the with a grain of salt and to honest when I fought I barely remember but moments of my toughest fights and could not tell you who hit the hardest...once you get sparked a little the memories tend to get sparked with them

In the late 1800's, a British paper said an American had made up a load of quotes claimed to be from British newspapermen.

Sharkey was a tortured guy. Being told to throw the Heavyweight Title and not really fullfilling his potential surley haunted him.
