We don't have to use self congratulatory phrases like ,"you had to have lived through those times",,"You had to have been around the boxing scene then to understand it " . etc

Now tell us in just what capacity you were ,"around the boxing scene in those days" ?
Boxer,who did you fight ? Trainer, who did you train? Manager, ditto? Cornerman, who did you second? Journalist which papers/ magazines did you write for ? Archivist ,which organization do/, have you contributed to ? Which of these was it ?

Certainly living through a time period puts one closer to all the nuances, day to day, week to week history that the fan today would not have access to.

NB Any fan today has more access to fight reports,films ,verified quotes, incidental data, than his predecessors before the internet age, that is an irrefutable fact ,an anorak kid sufficiently driven, could accumulate and parrot off more details, more facts than the old achivists such as Hank Kaplan, a true historian of his era ,could ever have hope to have amassed.
