Someone mentioned in a recent thread that Loughran would certainly be a top ten heavyweight today, but I'm not sure that he'd venture into the division at all, let alone do well there. Thoughts?

He becomes LHW champ and CW champ without Usyk there

He'd be a good heavyweight contender but would struggle with the likes of Usyk and Ruiz Jr. Don't see him becoming champ

He wouldn't fight at HW probably. He'd be amazing in LHW and CW divisions though.

Almost certainly wouldn't make heavyweight. It's very very very odd for a guy who turns pro at 140/147 to make heavyweight. There are one or two examples but why would Loughran be one of them?

His style evolved, to a great degree, because he had bad hands. He probably wouldn't have those same issues today, at least not to the same extent, so maybe his style would evolve differently. But he was at his core, a smart, thoughtful guy and he applied that to his craft, and he was obviously physically adept, so he'd always be in the hunt.

    Probably a middleweight, too.

He would have a whole myriad of options available to him, including a move up to heavyweight if he wished.

I don't know whether he would make that choice, but he would be under no undue pressure to.

With four versions of the title available at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweigth, the game might not be worth the candle.

Who are the best fighters you guys would favor Loughran to beat at heavy today (if he did move up)?

He'd do just fine at light heavy and below. Modern cruisers might be a bit much for him and results would be less stellar. Outside of a carefully picked opponent or two, he wouldn't do much good at heavy.

Loughran versus someone like Bivol might be interesting.

It should be pointed out that Loughran was fighting guys as big as the top heavyweights today.

Carnera, Impelettiere, Campollo, he was obviously up for fighting a big heavyweight who wasn't a great fighter!

Loughran wouldn't fare well against todays giant heavies, and I'm doubtful he would do particularly well in the 175lbs division.
Don't misunderstand me he was an ATG light heavy but he relied on his wonderful jab and his anticipatory powers.
A reasonably modern counterpart would have been Virgil Hill.
With the accent heavily biased towards fan friendly fighters for TV , I'm not so sure Tommy would get the opportunities he did in his own time.
He could probably make most modern light heavies look like two cents, but who would be paying to watch it?

None of those three were hitters though were they.

I wouldn't say that any of the were exceptional hitters, but he fought big guys, and he fought guys that could hit.

We are trying to gauge what he would and would not attempt, and the guy was clearly up for a challenge.

I think a guy like Loughran could do well in any era. Honestly, though, he'd be best at LHW, most likely. If he could make SMW he could rule it with an iron fist for as long as he liked.

Yes he was up for a challenge but, since today he would be facing two big punchers in Joshua and Wilder would he be up for them ?Because,in126 fights he never shared a ring with a black man!
