Why did he go from the default #2 choice to outside the top 5 for many people? I've noticed that I rank Barney Ross higher than some will rank Armstrong (#17), I've even quotes that top 20 is too high for him?

Has his generation been revised as weak? Was his run considered less impressive? Not dominant enough? To anyone who has Armstrong outside of their top 10 I'd love to hear why

I honestly think he peaked higher than anyone else.

I think he's at the highest level along with Bov Fitzsimmons, Sam Langford, Harry Greb, Ezzard Charles and Sugar Ray Robinson.

Imo he's a top 5 staple, I rank him 3rd, but I guess the good old fashioned revisionism disease got him

I’d have him in the discussion for top 3 actually and I’m taking a leap of faith having Greb in front of him based on the zero footage of him.

Armstrong has an incredible resume, mind blowing accomplishments and looks great on film. He’s an absolute full package as a fighter and I’d be shocked if anyone could mount a convincing argument that he doesn’t belong in the top 5 let alone top 10 p4p.

Why no Fitz and Charles in your opinion?

Henry is top 3 for me (SRR, Greb, Henry). Featherweight champion that whooped the welterweight champ. And the welterweight champ was Barney ****ing Ross. Ross was 53-1-1 in his last 55 fights. Henry defended his welterweight title 20 times in 29 months. His average weight for those title defences = 138 lbs. Yea, Henry was the man. If he isn't in your top 5, ydksab.

Greb over Armstrong. I'd like to hear a case for that. I'm openminded on Greb's standing.

I've long thought that when you are talking about the top 20 fighters of all time, you are talking about the elite of the elite and separating their greatness becomes a highly subjective exercise in establishing very fine margins to do that.

That said, Armstrong's achievements are so unique that I see no reasonable and objective way of him being outside the all-time p4p top 10 and he should be a top 5 in any respectable list imo. I don't think anything has changed that much in the last 20 or more years to unseat him. I myself have him at number 2 behind Robinson.

I would be very interested to know who thinks he should be outside the top 20 though!

Greb's superior competition edges out Armstrong's 3 weight conquering IMO. Greb would've been LHW champ had the belt not been hidden from Tunney by Levinsky
