So did Joyce's stock go up or down last night? I don't really know. That was his best win, opponent wise, but didn't look very impressive in doing so.
He never looks impressive but he gets the job done. I maintain he’s a problem for most of the top 15 but my god he’s dull.
Comprehensive victory. Wasn’t the most exciting fight but Jennings is a good fighter so it’s a good win. Jennings was pretty much in sparring partner mode for a lot of the fight. The fact he wasn’t letting his hands go more has to have been down to Joyce.
No. Jennings did have his success but it was in 1’s and rarely 2’s. There was times when you thought he could have really pressed on and took it to Joyce - who was relentless and didn’t stop but didn’t land anything meaningful. To rob a quote off the RBR - “if you watched the highlights of this fight you would think it was 11-1 to Jennings”. Every round he landed the better shots but was so few and far between. A bit more power and a better work rate and Joyce could have been in a world of bother.
I'm not convinced Joyce landed enough punches to win wide, or clear at all. Ineffective aggression doesn't win fights any more than pure defence does. Jennings blocked virtually everything Joyce was throwing. Something the commentators didn't even begin to acknowledge until the second half of the fight. John Rawling said "blocking punches does not win fights" .. but neither does throwing punches that get blocked, so .... Jennings didn't do enough to win, granted. But I'm not all convinced Joyce did either.
I said in the RBR it would be interesting to see how many of Joyce’s shots actually landed on Jennings arms. His accuracy is poor and is so inefficient with his shots.
Not the cleanest of punchers & reminds me of Ali’s description of Frazier as the ‘Mummy’. But his relentless pressure makes him a nightmare opponent for anyone - even after Jennings had landed his best head shots - barely even flinched. Vs Whyte would be a good test for each & probably the limit of his ability.
Scoring was bull****, Jennings won more rounds than was called by the cards. Unimpressed with Joyce, more impressed with Jennings. Jennings needs more of a killer instinct to tap into that stamina reserve that comes out of no where
Joyce reminds me of a bigger, more talented Matt Skelton. He is slow as **** and wastes a lot of energy with ineffective punching, but he has the gas tank to get away with it. His power seems decent enough for someone who rarely sits down on his punches. He'll reach a certain level, but anyone with a modicum of talent in regards to footwork, and a decent engine, will befuddle the guy. I would also worry about him if and when he faces a big puncher.
I don’t like to cast aspersions but, am I the only one who’s a little tiny bit suspicious of his staggering work rate and punch output for such a huge unit? Probably very harsh and I feel wrong for even saying it but it doesn’t sit right with me.
