    More effective power, you mean?

Exactly. If it was simply size and brute force, why could Cooper and Frazier floor Ali, but Foreman, Liston and Shavers couldn't?

Shavers KOed one top level fighter, Ken Norton, and that's it.

He has as many KOs over world class opposition as Corrie Sanders.

I guess you've never heard of a guy Jimmy Ellis who was top 4 when Shavers left him prone in 1 round.

Resume again, only means so much in the question of out and out power. There are dozens of guys who punch miles and miles above any resume "deficiency".

Guys like Andy Ganigan who would be right in the heart of the discussion when talking the hardest puncher in the history of the lightweight division. Jamie Garza who would be right at the forefront of hardest hitters ever to grace 122 pounds. John Mugabi would be another whose power would not be remotely reflected accurately when simply looking for top shelf opponents that were ko'd.

Some guys with enormous power simply just aren't that good in comparison to their power, with Shavers being a prime example. Sure he was a top 10 mainstay for a long time but the simple fact of the matter is that he did not get the boxing rewards commensurate to his raw power. After all t's just one factor to boxing success.

Shavers was slow of foot, didn't have much of a tank, often telegraphed his blows and swung for the fences and was a bit fragile himself. Ganigan was a bit chinny and Garza certainly couldn't take it back much either.

I would have to give the nod to Bob Fitzsimons....his power was proven against anyone and everyone and when we consider what he did to Sharkey when a 220lb Jeffries could not....his power was exceptional

    Honorable mentions

    Sam Langford
    Julian Jackson
    Stan Ketchel

Mike Weaver lacking in other areas as a boxer. You were good as long as he wasn't hitting you

Well you asked for examples and i duly provided some.

Again, nobody is debating Louis didn't stop more durable guys than Shavers or can't and didn't beat better fighters. There's a reason he is a top 2 Heavyweight and rated the "greatest" P4P puncher in history.

Well 10 pounds certainly seemed to make a big difference to you too given how hard you went to try and convince us that Louis was the same size as Shavers.

You've lost me completely. Given this is a P4P thread why would Shavers not be rated above both of these guys one of whom was around (roughly) 15 pounds heavier and the other more????

I can only assume you are claiming i believe Shavers to be a heavier outright puncher than Joe Louis because he was 10 pounds heavier? But why would you think that? I haven't said anything of the sort nor even stated i believe Shavers actually hit harder. That would also be going away from the P4P nature of the thread.

Some believe Dempsey and maybe Marciano hit heavier than Louis despite both being 10+ pounds lighter. Given the thread is P4P they would most certainly be in the conversation if someone were weighing up poundage particularly in the open division.

I don't believe Tua or Morrison hit harder than Shavers. Both would be in the discussion somewhere when talking hardest hitting heavyweights tho and they both have been over the years in here.

Sullivan I would rate really high based on his countless knockouts of a shitload of people according to legend and 1st hand accounts, but p4p doesn’t necessarily mean heavyweight either, so fitz has to be way high, also I’d say p4p Khaosai Galaxy or Edwin Valero has gotta be way up there

    God emperor Butterbean?
Is this even a serious question the man almost had prime Larry Holmes out cold it's more then Ali can say whose claim to fame was a fixed Bryant Jennings win.

(Silver medal probably goes to Greb)

I'm actually not a believer in resumes being a heavy part in discussions like these, but a lot of people are when it comes to other punchers, yet seem to waive it when it comes to Shavers. Look at the Corrie Sanders thread for instance. Plenty of people saying, "Well, who did he KO besides chinny Wlad?" ignoring the fact that he dropped and hurt a lot of guys known for their durability.

Ganigan was a huge puncher, I agree, P4P a fearsome KO merchant. I'd put Randall Bailey and Ezra Sellers in the mix for glass cannons too.

Morrison? Possibly. But no way was Shavers a harder puncher P4P than Tua, considering Tua wasn't that much heavier than Earnie and delivered far more stunning knockouts. The fact that Tua was possibly one of the hardest HW punchers ever, despite being about 225 in his prime is testament enough to his ridiculous KO power. Even against fighters significantly bigger than him he'd end up knocking them into a dribbling heap, where Shavers generally failed to stop guys that outsized him.

Shavers, for my money, has a claim to being the hardest punching CW in history. His heavy handedness for a 210 guy was pretty off the scale.

This is pretty debatable, and there are guys who probably hit harder who were lighter. Baer, Wilder and Liston come to mind

Sanders had big power for sure. Resume is one factor for sure but it's not the be all and end all. Bailey and Sellers are good mentions and Eugene Hart is another Glass Cannon. Big punchers.

I feel you but i'm not convinced he hit harder than The Acorn. He for me is a more dangerous and a better fighter because his delivery is more accurate, shorter and he had a concrete chin and carried his power later. He had assets Shavers simply didn't. If Shavers had his chin and tank he would have had a much better career than he did - and a more meaningful resume per ko's.
