Would a Yarde win represent the best british victory on a foreign soil?

We’re forgetting Joe C’s fantastic win against the ghost of RJJ.

No, I think it would be a very good win but not the best by a long shot. Haye, Calzaghe, Fury, Brook, McDonnell, Frampton have all had bigger wins abroad over the past 10 years than this one. Maybe even Khan too.

The best British victories on foreign soil were World War 1 and 2 with Liverpool's victory in Istanbul firmly in 3rd place.

John H. Stracey really deserves a mention in this thread.

If Kov was at his best then yes, but he’s well past his best so a definite no.

Ken Buchanan beating Ismael Laguna in Puerto Rico would eclipse it in my view.

Even though Kov is washed up it would be an excellent Win.

Surely Hughie Fury's destruction of the Nigerian Nightmare in Saudi is up there. Legendary.

It will be a great win even if Kovalev is a bit past it. Certainly the best win abroad since Fury vs Klit.

It would be big, but I think we can sometimes lose sight of just how unfancied certain fighters were.

This thread prompted me to look at the Hugh McIlvanney 'A Shocker Over Cocktails' report of the Curry Honeyghan fight. Honeyghan was 'commonly quoted' as having chances of '6/1 or more.' Yarde is currently 7/4 to beat Kovalev. McIlvanney writes that before the fight, only Marvin Hagler was considered in the question of pound for pound superiority against Curry. Yet today, I cannot find a list that includes Kovalev in the top ten.

The fact that Curry went on to lose a few more fights may alter the memory, but as a direct comparison this would be nowhere near.

    This is a good post.

... and I struggle to find the Matchroom angle. You must be on strike.

The Matchroom thing has purely arisen because unlike several on here I think Hearn has broadly done a good job for British boxers and I find Joshua far more entertaining than Fury. That's it.

At a guess I think I'm probably a bit older than some on here. I wonder if the here and now is seen more as a poor reflection of the past, which people sometimes see with incredibly rose-tinted specs on.

Too right. Especially when you think he was on the deck in the first as well. Napoles had not lost a fight at 147 (a couple of cuts apart) for a dozen years going into that bout. Not to dismiss Honeyghan's upset, but If Curry looked the real deal, Napoles had proved it for over a decade.
