    Boxers have to learn somewhere.

Lewis was awful v Bruno, Tucker and McCall, Steward spotted a massive flaw in Lewis, a wide right hand, he drilled McCall to time the sloppy right and that`s why Lewis got KO`d in `94, when Steward took over as LL`s trainer he straightened his right and Lewis started throwing far more 1-2`s.

Ritchie Giachetti is the guy that worked with young Holmes a ton and specifically the jab. He was there long before Arcel.

Duran and B.Leonard used the jab b etter than Tyson did in his fights v Ruddock and his rematch with Holy while trained by Giaghetti, however Ritchie did tell Mike to jab to Holy`s chest, Tyson just didn`t bother.

And Ritchie also worked with Buster Douglas when he licked Tyson, just not as the main trainer.

If a fighter beats Frank Bruno and Tony Tucker, he isn't "awful." That fighter beat two big, strong, talented boxers. All fighters have flaws and all trainers have a story to tell about something they saw before the fight that they taught their fighter to take advantage of in the fight. The fighter has to execute in the ring, he's in there by himself, but when things go right everybody wants to be a part of it. EVERYBODY the fighter talks to has seen something the opponent does wrong, and EVERYBODY is giving him advice before the fight. The trainer and everybody that hangs around the gym always has a story after the fight about how his advice made the difference. If the fighter won it was because he did what the trainer/hanger around said, if he lost, he didn't listen. That's what you hear in every gym about every fight.

I knew some of McCall's management team at the time he fought Lewis. They were more than confident that he would beat Lewis and having Stewart in the corner was not the reason. They had always said that McCall was the most gifted heavyweight and that if they could get one week of training from him he could beat anybody and that if they could get two weeks of training nobody could stay close to him. They managed to keep him in camp before the Lewis fight. If you knew some of the stories about McCall's lifestyle outside the ring and some of the things he did in sparring against well known fighters, you'd know that McCall's win over Lewis was not as shocking to people in boxing as it was to fans.

Yep Tyson not using his jab against Ruddock as well as Duran and Benny Leonard would have done definitely proves the case that Arcel taught Holmes how to jab properly. This thread should be closed now.

Ray Arcel was picked out by Duran's Panamanian backers to train Duran. He created the lightweights greatest Boxer.

Yeah, I went to a questions and answers evening where Manny Steward and Tommy Hearns were the guest speakers. Manny took over. It was an interesting evening. Manny could answer every question with a long detailed story using examples of other fighters and what he told them to do and what they did when they won listening to him. He had vast experiences to call upon to demonstrate every point. He was extremely generous.. But none of it was anything any good trainer would not do in that situation. He was a really confident speaker and had an awful lot of first hand experiences with a lot of great fighters, even ones he was not famous for coaching but had worked with. My takeaway was he was a great trainer and he was also a great salesman. Just like the rest of them.

Tyson had a very small reach fighting giants so there's only so much he was going to do with a jab at any rate.

The passage in that book is NOT saying Arcel taught Holmes how to jab properly! He just gave some tricks of the trade. Just what one would expect from an old time trainer.

Reach has little to do with jab effectiveness. Tyson outjabbed modt if his opponents who all had longer reach than he did. Jab effectiveness is all about speed, timing and skill.
