I would also like to know more about his NC fights with Denver Ed Smith and Ted White, as both were quality contenders when Maher fought them.

Sharkey was pre-prime when they fought. It was before the first Jeffries fight and he improved a ton from then to the second one.

I don't think Maher has anything near as good as Ruhlin's win over Sharkey, but he was very inconsistent.

Fair enough, but Maher wasn't close to his best either with second meeting.
Ruhlin was a very good fighter, but as you said quite inconsistent and I don't think he ever established his position in HW division to a point that he was called HW champion or at least the first contender. Maher was viewed as such until the fight with Fitz. Ruhlin didn't do much better against Bob.

Based on resumes, we should be favoring Corbett here, and probably based on styles as well.

But, and there is a but, the best punchers that Corbett fought tended to catch up with him eventually.

So I am saying Corbett, but you never know!

Again, what makes Corbett resume better than Maher?
    Here I agree.
This is important. Corbett outboxed pretty much every opponent he fought in his prime but he wasn't unbeatable. He has losses and most of them against good punchers. He won against Choynski but lost against Fitz, Jeffries and Sharkey.

He closed the distance on the summit better.

    Beat Sullivan, drew with Jackson.

I am almost certain that Maher would beat old, alcoholic version of Sullivan.

Corbett is the bigger man here, and has far more skill and speed. I think he stops Maher late. Maher was something of a glass canon.

Maher was not a mover or hard to hit. Sully wasn't that old. He probably could still hit. I'd learn toward Maher,

Not by much and actually Maher has longer reach (at least listed reach). Maher fought at 180 lbs against Fitz, Corbett weighed 184 lbs in his title defense. The difference is very small.
Probably true, though I don't know much about Maher speed. Corbett was very fast though, so I'd expect him to be faster.
To be honest I'd be very surprised if this fight lasted long. Either Maher would find Corbett early and stop him within first 6 rounds or Corbett would outclass him and Maher would either quit or get stopped before 10th. At least that's my prediction.

He probably could, but I doubt he would get Maher before being dropped. Maher beat many durable fighters and Sullivan was in very bad shape at this point. I don't see him beating any top contender to be honest.

Sullivan was 34 years old ,alcoholic and had not fought for over 4 and a half years!
He was probably in far worse shape than Jeffries when he fought Johnson!

Even at that stage of his career, Sullivan's power might bail him out, against somebody who stood in front of him.

I would favor Maher, but you never know.

Either way, I think that the man who was really the best heavyweight in the world, was Peter Jackson at that stage.

Corbett clearly did better against Jackson than Maher did!

The problem with the underlined is Maher was pre prime when he fought the bang in prime Jackson ,whereas Corbbett was prime, facing probably a slightly past prime Jackson, 2 years later. So the comparable results aren't really comparable at all are they?
