He seems wildly popular with UK boxing fans (at least on the forums) and I don’t see it: Weak chin Poor stamina Good power but not an exceptional offensive fighter IMO — doesn’t guarantee fireworks or great exchanges like you’d expect to appeal as an action fighter No real quality wins He seems more like a hyped prospect who fell far short, has hung around and does well at the domestic level but doesn’t even rise to real success at, say, the Euro level. Not exactly a contender. And he basically gets sparked out whenever he steps up. So why is he so beloved?
Because Price actually seems like a good guy, as opposed to the gutter trash/criminal stock you commonly see in this sport. He isn't arrogant, doesn't try to intimidate people. Isn't fake. Believe it or not, some folk actually respond to that, to people they might actually choose to associate with in real life as opposed to dumb animals they'd keep themselves and their family the hell away from. He also won a medal, developed a great highlight reel coming up. Then you clearly have a large group of dumb animal boxing fans who get off of disrespecting a guy like this, taunting and mocking him all over social media etc., a guy that has the nuts to go toe to toe with Povetkin and go out on his shield. Go listen to the latest interview where he talks about his kids getting mocked even. That only happens in current media society, though, idiots branding a man weak from safe distance, and giving **** to his family too, despite the fact he would physically destroy them. We're not talking about a few jokes, the guy has been systematically disrespected in rare fashion.
David Price is an exciting fighter to watch. This explains his appeal in a nutshell. Big power. But fragile punch resistance and poor stamina means he is almost always in a gloriously exciting fights. Then you have the complexity of his mentality. Will he beat the demons of the Thompson losses at some point, and roll back the years to when he was blitzing everyone in under 3 rounds.
He was “supported” last night because it was so obvious he was levels above Allen. The sheer disrespect to have Allen 1/2 favourite was a joke. Other than that He’s a cult hero. He’s been wronged by drugs cheats so deserves support, he’s got a glass chin and devastating power - so when he fights it usually culminates in entertainment and of course the underdog factor.
It's been 6 years since he got Ko'd by Thompson. Over that period he has provided plenty of entertainment and built up a lot of goodwill with the fans. Basically we like him because we know him.
We don't like him because we think he's any good we like him because he's a nice chap. We want nice chaps to do well because we are nice chaps.
This. You never know what is going to happen. He almost had Povetkin out of there. He almost ended up losing against Kash Ali as he was absolutely gassing. He is an enigma.
its obvious Price is a decent bloke. He is exciting to watch and you never know what to expect when he fights. I always thought he was too nice so im loving this new loud Price who just says it how it is. Mad disrespectful that Allen was having fights arranged before the fight even happened. Glad Price got the win and im going to keep supporting him and following his career. Allen needs to **** off now. It was all fun and games at the beginning but its boring now. He needs to grow up. He will never take boxing seriously and that is disrespectful for this sport that we all love so much.
Price should have worked on his physical fitness and stamina years ago. And improve his body and head movement and footwork. Last night he peppered Allen with jabs and circled him. Then he bought the right hand in with quick one twos. And in the later rounds he was throwing combinations. He had a good variety of punches. I can see why Hearn likes having him on his cards. He is a big puncher, down to earth and you know someone will get knocked out. Another point is although he was never going to be world champion he has had some rotten luck. Tony Thompson and Erkan Teper were on PEDs when they fought him. And he tore his rotator cuff against Kuzmin (though he was always likely to lose that bout). Plus Povetkin is a two time drug cheat. He now moves up to 19 on Boxrec.
Always provides excitment, he is just honest and himself not real PR or over the top nonsense and lost to a few drug cheats. He sort of booed going in and what pretty out of order really no need for it, British heavyweight who is your every man
