Plus points: He boxed well behind the jab after an iffy start, controlled the action and came back into the fight after the heavy KD. His work to the body was generally very good and he mixed up his offensive shots well. His defence was tight and he used the ring to his advantage. His jab's really become a potent weapon, not because it's particularly quick or powerful, but just because of how consistent it is and how it's used to set up all his other shots, more often than not. Minus points: He still has a tendency to let his brawling nature get the better of him. His counter shots were too often predictable and overcommitted, particularly that home run left hook of his that was missing by a mile. He's got a great left hook, but he needs to stop throwing it so often, and vary the power on it. His right hand is still quite an underdeveloped weapon. A few times he caught Rivas with it and hurt him, but overall it was not a very well-utilised tool. Overall: decent performance, and encouraging to see him fight back from a KD to win the fight, something which takes composure as well as heart. He needs to focus more on working off the jab though, and cut down on throwing that ridiculous left hook when he's way out of position to land it. Focus on jabs, short rights, uppercuts and bodyshots, and break down his opponents that way. He does that and he becomes a very hard man to beat.
Rivas was a bit exposed tonight as a limited fighter. Pretty disapointed in him was hoping for much more.. His plan A didn't but he didn't have a plan B. Whyte put on a pretty good performance against some one I though was going to give him a much better run that he did. Lucky for Rivas those steroid infused traps keep his chin nice and stable taking shot after shot....
Nah, Rivas wasn't exposed. He fought exactly like he did with Jennings. Difference was that Jennings was much more cautious after he feeled power of Rivas so Rivas won more rounds. Rivas biggest problem today was inactivity and bad jugement of distance. Whyte jab was very busy in mid rounds and won him severl of those rounds quite comfortably although not many punches landed clean. I had it 5-1 after 6 and it was mostly due to jab and activity, not really because Whyte landed hard shots or many more punches. Rivas stepped it up after 6-7 rounds i think, did much better, more pressure, and the knockdown didn't come out of nowhere imo but Rivas left eye was very, very bad, nearly close after 11 i think. Without thtat i think Rivas would have put on a very explosive and strong finish. Whyte won and deserves the UD here but Rivas wasn't exposed imo. Wasn't impressed by Whyte though. Rivas without that damaged eye probably stops Whyte after the kd.
I don't think this fight told us any more about Rivas than the Jennings fight. He was getting outboxed there as well and stormed back to get the KO. He very nearly did so here. He's a pretty good ambush fighter, but perhaps because of the muscle mass he's carrying in his upper body he needs to take breathers between bursts, which is when taller fighters can go to work on piling up the points. He's very dangerous though, massive punching power and a solid chin, and seems to be able to pull things out the bag when they're needed. Based on that performance alone I'd put him in the lower half of the top ten.
Good breakdown. I've noticed that when Rivas isn't punching he's measuring up his opponent to land a big one. When he unloads he's generally very accurate and seems to catch fighters a bit unawares, which might contribute to his success. I'm not sure if he beats Whyte without the damaged eye though, and if that was the case then he should have leapt on Whyte from the start before the damage began to build up, since it's always going to be a problem for him. Ref was a bit hands on in that last round, but Whyte's generally pretty good at surviving. He clinches well and turns things dirty when he's buzzed, and Rivas was getting pretty effectively tied up without the ref's intervention IMO.
He seemed pretty shaky and tentative after he stood up. I'd say he was a lot more hurt than he showed.
I think his balance is his biggest flaw but that's really hard to evolve. But nearly all his flaws seem to link to a lack of athleticism, and as a consequence, a lack of balance too, in defense and attack. He works around the problem pretty effectively but it makes him look uncoordinated. He's better than the eye test suggests.....
Yeah, he doesn't move very naturally. Sort of disjointed. It's not so noticeable when he's boxing behind the jab as is able to keep his composure, but when he has a fighter hurt or is hurt himself he really becomes ragged, like a badly controlled marionette. He needs to keep working behind his jab, and only unload the big guns when he's in a position to do so. He's currently a weird mix of cautious and reckless, and the reckless part doesn't really serve any function.
Whyte has a good chin and took some bombs very well, same for Rivas. The main problem with Rivas from R2 till R6/7 was that he was coming forward but not throwing a lot, i think the height advantage of Whyte took its toll there as Rivas was cautious with letting his hands go because of Whyte landing first to the punch before (he rocked him solidly in R2). Rivas fought very well in the opening round and had much better judgement of distance there, also controlled Whyte with his footwork. Whyte figured it out between R2 and R3. R2 was close but Whyte edged it with the bombs he landed rocking Rivas there, there wasn't much between them apart from that. But from R3 Whyte just threw the jab constantly and edged those rounds without any big punches landed. I think it was a close fight but Whyte won rightfully. He was just a bit smarter in the mid rounds and edged those 3-4 rounds which were between them in the end. btw: Yeah, the ref was disgusting in the last round. He probably expected same aggressive approach by Rivas like in Jennings fight and already took some time out for Whyte with controlling the ****ing shorts of both fighters, really, really disgusting. Same for the two or three warnings for using his head, lmao, it was the last round of the fight and Rivas didn't do anything wrong with his head, acting like that was the typical UK bias and UK home crook factor as you always have. Don't think Rivas had anything left to take Whyte out though. Whyte has classy survival skills. But still, disgusting piece of **** acting by the ref.
Honestly IMO, if he showed up in this terrible shape to fight a legit top 10 contender he'd get taken to the cleaners. Credit to him for getting up from that knockdown and generally outboxing Rivas but his lack of conditioning was showing.
