hector thompson is an aussie boxing legend. a murderous puncher who killed two blokes in the ring. he went on to fight roberto duran who he gave all he could handle for 7 (?) rounds. breaking durans ribs in the process. however, months before the duran fight, hector was beaten over 10 by a 15yo kid..... kahu mahanga was a great kiwi fighter. ko'd tony mundine in his prime. the same, now 16 yo kid, beat mahanga over 10........ the young kids name was ray mcgrady. due to alcohol he never reached his peak. he died of alcoholism at age 27....
I remember the Kahu Mahunga Fight....It was really fluke KO....But I loved it just the same.:yep As for Thompson.....He was never the same after the first death....and who could blame him? .... I loved to watch him fight. This Kid I have never heard of...but he must have had something going for him....:good
Good to see ya posting a bit more actively again OZ. Where ya been? (PS. By the way oztriker.com.au is still available - you should snap it up )
he beat mahanga on points. couldnt have been a fluke over 10 rounds..... and thompson was good enough to be the top contender for durans title......and the kid beat him months before!!!!!! over 10 rounds!!
You misunderstood me....atsch I wasn't dissing the kid... I meant the Mundine fight with Mahunga.... And I was referring to Thompson's attitude....It was common knowledge that he lost a little of the killer that he had... I said the kid must have had something going for him....Don't jump to conclusions....I don't hate everybody....:nono Just most....:hey
Stalking the girls in the Lounge....Ozperv runs amok again:hey I might have to just do that....:rofl :rofl :rofl :good
Ray McGrady later went by the name Ceddy McGrady. He had a lot of ability, very flashy but was never in shape. When I see Edgar Wymarra I am reminded of Ceddy. A sad end for Ceddy.
when i learned of mcgrady my jaw dropped. unbelieveable that one so young could achieve such wins, talent or not. wow, he must have had some talent!
I think Ceddy and Ray are different stingers. Ceddy is still with us and was a magnificent have gloves will travel journeyman with a record of 33-89-5 http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=126235&cat=boxer Ray McGrady was a tough hombre that they talk about alongside Cliffy Samardin as one of the great Aboriginal talents that circumstances stopped from greatness. Ray was known as Widdy McGrady later in his career. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=54298&cat=boxer
Sally, Ray and brother Ceddy were spoken of pretty well by Max Ryan- old timer from Narrabri. He gives Ray McGrady a special tribute in his book, "Two champs from Narrabri". Sometimes it amazing to look at the records of these 'kids' who did the freaky things and fell to the weyside... I believe Ray McGrady was kicked to death!!
A good friend of mine is related to Ray McGrady. McGrady is from the same family as former footballer Ewan McGrady.
aparently, as talented as ray was,he certainly was no angel. one can only wonder at the conditions he was brought up in. an historical fact that should be known, is that charkey ramon and ray mcgrady once had an alterction. ray came second. no referee i was told.
My good friend is Rays cousin. Just had a chat tonight and I mentioned this thread. A few things for clarification and info: - Widdy is Rays father. - Ray started his fighting as a 14 yr old travelling around as a tent fighter. - The fight with Hector was actually taken on short notice. Hardly anyone knew he was fighting Hector! - He died on the operating table in Narrabri Hospital, the result of a ruptured spleen. He had been sick for some time. - He use to give Tony Mundine a touch up in the gym. flamengo, where can i get a copy of that book "two champs from narrabri"? my mate would love to have a look at it.
