Actually, that said, I'm leaning towards Cervantes with more confidence than I initially felt. His long distance straight punching and timing/distance control coupled with him not being at a strength disadvantage or a notable speed one at the weight would probably make Chavez have to work a bit too hard over 15. Cervantes, close but clear UD15.
Two of the most dominant (each combined 16 defenses in two title reigns over 7 year period) and brilliant jnr welterweight champions: -Cervantes: WBA champion 1972-76 (10 defenses) ; 1977-80 (6 defenses) -Chavez: WBC champion 1989-94 (12 defenses); 1994-96 (4 defenses) + IBF champion 1990-91 Kid Pambele was probably at his peak in 74-75, Chavez in 89-90. Nice contrasting styles that would mesh - this one is a can't miss. Cervantes has height and reach advantage - the question is how often Chavez can get inside to work the body and slow Cervantes down. Agree with other posters that this one goes the full 15 rounds. I'm leaning towards Cervantes in an action packed fight by close decision, but not sure about it. Great matchup.
Historically speaking Chavez will be remembered as the overall better fighter(Rightfully so) , him winning titles in multiple weight classes. But at Super lightweight , I lean slightly to Cervantes, his range , counter punching ability , and power would keep Chavez honest. I see Cervantes wining this one by close unanimous or majority dec. But their will be no knockdowns in this one if both men are prime or close to it.
Antonio pull s off a great upset win . Beating him to the punch , looking the stronger guy . Dropping Chavez out of the blue mid fight and from then on in , winning most of the rounds . Julio , never getting back in the fight after the kd .
Also a close fight for me, Lean towards Cervantes as well and because I'm in his home town right now!!
Many physical fighters with formidable offense skills had difficulties with slick boxers. Chavez though was a offense machine and this would bring out the best in kid. The Kid on pts.
Again, I don't know much about The Kid but he lost to a 17yr old with less than three years experience, one who subsequently drew with Harold Weston and went life and death with Bruce Curry. That guy just doesnt beat the Chavez I remember at 140. Based on that, I pick Chavez but it is, I admit, based on results rather than what I know about the fighters having seen them.
Lol I'm glad you liked it .It s a fairy story .I'd never predict a fight that had JCC actually KNOCKED down ! Unless he was fighting Hearns at welterweight !
