Max was calling the fight when Beetheven Scottland was fatally injured on ESP against George Khalid Jones. I think that gave him insight into how bad things were on Friday given his experience that night.
Buddy's going to be kicking himself, but he did the right thing, at the right time. Hell, people criticized him for when he did stop it (as in, calling it too early, and whining that Dadashev himself never agreed with halting it).
That's the one I was thinking of. Thanks for specifying. It always makes me nervous when he starts talking like that, because he's sitting ringside and he knows what those fights look like. Back to Kirkland/Tapia, he was adamant that fight should be stopped and so was I. But he does send up the flag pretty frequently, tho who can blame him. I recall Lampley being blase about the Rueles/Garcia tragedy as it was unfolding, and then he became much more attuned to that stuff following that death. Sad state of affairs when you have so many examples to cite.
"... It just makes you realize what type of sport we're in, man," McGirt told ESPN. "He did everything right in training, no problems, no nothing. My mind is like really running crazy right now. Like, what could I have done differently? But at the end of the day, everything was fine [in training]. He seemed OK, he was ready, but it's the sport that we're in. It just takes one punch, man. ..." https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/27244105/boxer-dadashev-dies-friday-fight-injuries
I think it would be very prudent to handle each and every ko, tko, corner stoppage etc.....with the same priority at this point. As if someone's life is in immediate jeopardy because recent events prove this is clearly the case. Better to be overly cautious than not IMO
Maryland could start doing the neuro checks in between rounds like in New York. Even that would be tricky since he was never rocked that badly. I don’t think anyone is to blame (that I know of). The walk out of the ring didn’t kill him.
@IntentionalButt what's your take on this fight being a 12 rounder? Things could have been different if this was a 10 rounder, and probably it should have been.
R.I.P. I wonder if to safeguard fighters in the future, that rounds become 2 minutes long and 10 Rounds maximum. That is erasing 16 minutes unless you go Rnds 1-5 3 minutes long then Rnds 6-10 2 minutes long. Something has to change. What?, I have no idea bar my suggestions above. One death in the ring is always one too many. Heartbreaking.
Fighters should feel comfortable to quit whenever they feel they had too much and physically unable to continue, especially when advised so by their trainers. We shouldn't be glorifying the 'die in the ring' attitude or label fighters as 'gladiators'. I would rather be less entertained by boxing, then tolerate people dying or getting long-term health problems. The problem should also be researched from a medical standpoint to introduce more preventive measures and checkups both between rounds and after KOs/beatings.
Sickening news. RIP fella. Thoughts with all connected and a special word for Matias. Poor guy must and will go through hell in the coming weeks/months/years. I try to think of the fighter but it is hard to control your own emotions and at times and I've called fighters quitters and lacking heart. I'll try to never do that ever again, even the lowest guy on the ladder risks his life everytime he laces up and for that they should all be commended, no matter how they perform in the ring. **** man, harrowing news.
