Is the Hall of Fame overrated?

I cannot even remotely begin to fathom why so many put such great importance in it.

 

I agree, it's unimportant.
No one ever used to mention it until recent years.

 

Should be called the hall of popularity. Because it is. Not true greatness..

 

I think it's just used as shorthand, I doubt people really rank based off that, but it's an easy way to show how crazy Harry Greb's record is.

It says nothing of what state said HOFer was in, and it's Hall of FAME, not Hall of Skills, or Hall of Achievement.

 

It's probably the easiest hall of fame to get into in all of professional sports...its mostly about autograph signings and ticket sales nowadays

 

There are atleast 10 fighters in there that wouldn't be considered all time greats

 

I think it’s used poorly by people that either are too lazy to do real research or don’t care enough. I.e - most Mayweather fans. The type who just skim over a record on Boxrec and think they have the total lowdown on a guy’s career.

I’ve seen Canelo fans and Mayweather fans tell me Canelo beating Mosley is better than Trinidad’s win over Vargas, Calzaghe over Kessler, Zarate over Zamora because of “hall of fame” status.

In general, because of a minimum of four inductees then three, the hall became watered down and popularity based. Mancini, Vitali, McGuigan, Gatti, Ingo in and still no room for Herrera, Rose, Roman, Basora? Madness. This years class was weak too. Fine fighters but a full level below what should be the requirement for hall of fame.

Hopefully their new 3-year retirement policy helps filter out some of the weak entrances. I just wish it was as tough as baseball so the term “hall of famer” meant what it was designed to mean.

 

There should only be one fighter inducted every year. Makes it more prestigious.

 

I honestly don't care too much either way about who gets in or doesn't. It's absolutely true that Mancini and McGuigan aren't as accomplished or talented as others who have to date been forsaken. It's also entirely beside the point. This is what it advertises itself to be, which is the Hall of Fame. Fame...……..not "The Hall of Great" or even "The Hall of Very Good."

Comparing it to the baseball or football Hall is dicey because by definition, if you've made it to the point in those sports to where you're influencing the writers and fans enough to warrant inclusion, you have to have been really, really good. You have to actually make the team first, THEN people can start talking about you. Unlike boxing, where champs and records and stats and things can be padded, real challenges avoided but trinket belts still won, still in the public eye to garner all the publicity and money while operating far more in smoke and mirrors than actual content. You can create your own legend far easier there as opposed to team sports. This is why fewer people ***** about the baseball or football Hall of Fame. There is a far more definable path to "greatness."

 

Its a joke today. Anyone can get in, particularly if they are able to show up and sign memorabilia away to the Brophy family...

 

It is very inconsistent, in terms of what gets you in.

 

Arturo Gatti's in it and he lost to the very average Ivan Robinson twice.

Not sure on statement of 3 year policy? IBHOF it's five years before a person can qualify, or are you referring to something else?
Joked once that I may pass of old age bfore Hopkins qualify LOL! I think it is 2022 for him & 2023 for RJJ.

For me, I agree with inducting maybe 2 or less. At it seems they run out of good names, then add on post humus inductees, hard to determine exactly what is the criteria.

 

It is a business, that would not work. It needs a face to get publicity and at least a couple that will help sell tickets. After that, it can induct those who deserve a place purely on performance.
