I think Willard of the Havana 1915 fight has a bit too much strength, head movement and endurance for Shavers. Shavers scores a KD but ultimately is taken out rounds 8-12

Many forget Willard was a big puncher himself

 

Shavers could be taken out to so there's a possibility the fight wears on , the chance exists that Jess tags him .He could do a wears him down job .

I'd favour Shavers early, with the caveat that Shavers lost to some pretty mediocre opponents and that he was not as fast as Dempsey.

If Shavers blows his wad - and there's a reasonable chance - then he's in for a career ending beating because Willard was huge and tough and had unusually good stamina.

But more likely Shavers finds a way though Jess's ho-hum defence and wrecks him.

Let me see Willard couldn't beat crude 190 pound Jack Dempsey but he would beat Shavers? Shavers by first round decapitation.

Willard at his best was actually good defensively, especially not getting caught clean.
Willard wasn't close at all to his best when he fought Dempsey.

I think he'd do it.

Not textbook, but he was quite a natural fighter.

So my point still stands. Earnie Shavers was a modern skilled heavyweight who was known for being one of the hardest punchers of all time with big modern gloves. Jess Williard was a big slow oaf who fought in a inferior era where the athleticism was worse, the skill level was inferior, and the talented was inferior. Willard couldn't even beat 180 pound tomato can by modern standards Jack Dempsey. So Shavers would knock out Dempsey, Tunney, and Willard with in 20 seconds.
