Golovkin sent that overrated nutcase packing up in Big Bear. Canelo and Yarde destroy him. The most overrated boxer of this generation. Going the distance with a 49 year old, Jesus Christ.
It is amazing how Calzaghe was slated for fighting Hopkins, despite putting in a dominant and technically superior display which made a mockery of the SD, and yet not much has ever been said about a prime Kovalev going in with a 49 year old Hopkins and failing to get him out of there. Hopkins was tough but Kovalev should have been making a serious statement that point, Joe Smith Jnr knocked him out of the ring two years later.
Well 2 years is 2 years and Hop didn't fight in between at his age it was bound to catch up with him. I always thought it was a strange fight for him at that stage. Pre Kov Hop was on a nice little run of beating good but not great fighters and he was never easy to hit so that's why Kov wasnt given too much grief me thinks. Kov's faded and he can be hit and hurt which is where Yardes chances are - but he's never had to box at someone eslse pace etc etc. McGirt had Kov really well paced in the Alvarez rematch - he went in there used is jab and just boxed and it was a shut out. If he can do the same against Yarde will AY handle it? The honest answer is we don't know 'cause he's never been tested but he's been cought plenty of times by non punchers.. Will be a good fight but I wouldn't be betting the house on Yarde despite Kov's recently struggles
There's a lot that is very dubious with this post. Calzaghe wasn't slated for fighting Hopkins whatsoever. The fight itself was slated for being a bit of a messy, scrappy affair. Joe stated before the fight he would be the first top stop Hopkins but never got near it, and like it or not, a sizeable number gave the fight to Hopkins. Not sure why you'd slate Kovalev for not stopping Hopkins. He dropped and battered him and the fight really could have been stopped. Hopkins talked himself into that fight, 'I can bend time to my will' and so on. He was even calling himself the alien at that stage! Plenty gave him a chance but Kovalev was too good.
I remember a lot of people being highly critical of Calzaghe. He won that fight, Hopkins had to keep resorting to his usual dirty tactics to stay in it. I wasn't slating Kovalev, I just suggested that it was a real opportunity for him to make a statement. Hopkins talked more and more s**t the longer he went on, apparently he'd never lose to a white man.....
Was amazed at that fight. I don’t think Browne recovered from the first KD. Pascal rolling back the years.
Wow! This fight is just over 20 days away I’m still not sure they step in the ring and it actually happens but at least we’ve got this far
Every year makes a massive difference at that point so 2 years is a fair while. Add to that Hopkins looked to survive and Kovalev seemed to content for him to do that and you have a UD 12. When you figure in that in the 2 rounds Hopkins showed any ambition he was put back in his box and nearly stopped then your post seems a bit harsh. I'd also like to say Kovalev is an asshat so this isn't me making excuses for his dumb ass.
Really excited about this now. It’s got that Beterbiev vs Johnson feel about it. I don’t believe Yarde will be able to box with Kovalev, he is still a fantastic technical boxer. He knows how to control the pace of a fight with that jab and he can coast to a relatively comfortable decision. So I hope Yarde just comes out & goes for it and makes it a shoot out in first few rounds because ironically, it’s Yarde who’s going to struggle with going the distance here, not Kovalev. I personally think this is going to be an easy win for Kovalev but i’m supporting the British lad all day long and hope he gets the big win. LIONS!!!!
I'm really rooting for Yarde, the Lions thing doesn't even annoy me anymore, if he wins he'll set the division on fire, so many big fights to be made, potentially.
In yesterday's ESPN boxing broadcast from Belfast, they announced thery're showing Kovalev-Yarde, so the fight is pretty much on.
