Are fighters born with a fight IQ or can they be taught to be clever in the ring?

Why do trainers tell fighters they can`t learn to fight like Mayweather? Can you learn to fight like F.Mayweather or not?

It certainly helps to have a great trainer from an EARLY age who teaches you the right way to operate in the ring, but I do believe some guys innately understand what to do in the ring better than others. That's just the nature of ANYTHING in life really.

Eddie Futch could have started training Amir Khan when Khan was 10, and Khan would still be an idiot in the ring. He just cant grasp boxing.

I think the true naturals like Duran, Whitaker, Floyd ect just saw the sport on a high-speed chess level that cant be taught.

People try to emulate Mayweather’s style just because it’s Mayweather and not because it’s what suits them, Floyd does it because he was taught it as a kid. His dad and uncle had the same style.

of course you can learn boxing IQ. Look at Pacquiao.

Amir Khan on the other hand is the opposite example.

Both, but when you dont have the best hardware (brain), you wont become the best fighter, no matter how hard you train. Schools and universities never produced geniuses...

A great trainer and a guy who's willing to humble himself can learn alot and develop a high ring iq. The problem is most of these trainers are **** these days and most of the fighters think they know everything already.

Everybody is teachable. The teacher/student relationship works best when the teacher's manner of teaching syncs with the students way of learning.

No, it goes beyond not being teachable. Floyd is a rare TALENT. Same with Roy, Leonard, Pac, Whitaker, Duran, ect.

You cant teach talent. Skill can be taught, but in many cases, you gotta have the talent to IMPLEMENT the skill.

I think many of us wanna believe that if we were TAUGHT from an early age how to be a great boxer, we could have been... but it dont work that way.

For example, EVERYTHING that Cuss taught Mike would have been totally useless if Mike didnt possess insane natural speed and power.

Of course it’s taught. No one knows how to box. No one does the shoulder roll coming out of the womb. Talent is who can execute what they learn the best.

This guy wasnt talking about skill. He was talking about ring IQ.

And I do believe that some guys NATURALLY think better in the ring than others.

Indeed. How many people do you now see blindly imitating Floyd and Roger's flashy padwork routines, simply because "It's what Mayweather did" and because it worked for Floyd, they think it'll work for them ... even though it doesn't suit that person's style whatsoever?
